The end began with darkness. When some think of darkness, they imagine the loss of light. While this was certainly the case for Aleris, the bleak emptiness that embraced the realm drained it of life. No one knew how the blackness came to be or why it chose Aleris. Perhaps it was just Aleris' fate to eventually succumb to something like this. When one war after another surfaced on a constant schedule, many speculated that another bad thing was too come. However, they did not envision the loss of their home to be quite so unforgiving.

Black skies surrounded Aleris for several weeks and while some believed it was a prolonged stay of night, the stars and moon had vanished. Scholars studied the skies and found that the darkness they saw had nothing to do with night at all. In fact, the sun that shone on Aleris every morning for hundreds, perhaps thousands of years, had just disappeared. Because of this, Aleris fell into a frigid coldness that no one had ever felt before. Even creatures that stayed naturally warm, like the therianthropes and dragons, felt the a touch of ice in their bones.

Vegetation began to die at a fairly rapid pace and forests were destroyed en masse. People on every continent, even in the deserts of Heruin, tried to keep warm, but the fires they burned only protected them for so long. Animals fled from the woods trying to find new homes and certain sources of meat vanished dwindled. The earth dried out, cracked and injured from the lack of water and the life that was being sucked from it. The strange thing was, though there was cold, there was no snow or bitter winds. It was said that even the snow that had laid over Arthuran for years was now gone.

Some stayed on Aleris and prayed to the gods. Some stayed and just hoped things would get better, as they usually did. The gods did not answer. People had said Aurora had died. People said a lot of things, but as far as getting answers from the gods, it became apparent that this was a useless thing to do. And after some time, after the devoted had exhausted their prayers, the temples were abandoned and left to thieves and those who simply had nothing better to do than scavenge.

The worst of the cold came shortly after the faith to the gods was lost. The oceans froze. People tried to carve holes and fish from the oceans, but no amount of tools or magical fire could get through the ice. As a result, the race of the merfolk was killed off first. Rivers inland were either dried out or frozen solid. The dwindling food source was once thing, but the seeming loss of all water supply was another.

No matter where you travelled, the ground was littered with corpses of animals and humans. For quite a few people who chose to stay, they turned to cannibalism as a resort to continue to feed themselves. The vampires, during a certain point, were at the top of the food chain as they relied on the blood of others. But as people died off and they were too greedy in their consummation of blood, eventually their food source lessened.

Others finally took the crippling of Aleris as a sign; they had to leave. Sailing away by ship was not an option. Several people left by airship to points unknown, hoping the fuel would take them far enough, and in some cases, airships were outright stolen, manned by only a select few. Families with no hopes of getting on an airship and not knowing what else to do, took what little supplies they had left and made a trek out across the solid oceans in hopes they would find something inhabitable. Mages began scouring their books trying to find spells that would conjure portals to other worlds. As for the rest, they remained with the thoughts that they would either perish in the cold or be eaten by whatever cannibal would find them.

But even as Aleris withers away, there are still a few stories left to be told. Despite the weakness of all things on Aleris, memories are strong and if there is any hope to be had, it is that some of these memories and stories make it safely out of the realm.

There used to be sand here.

Wish was almost sure of it, but she couldn't remember how things used to be. She couldn't recall the green of the trees or the blue of the sky. The way the clouds drifted lazily over spring and summer days. The sand, that was gray and cracked, just like everything else. Absent from this realm was the feeling of fine sand drifting through her fingers and toes. It was one reason she had moved to her little island that was nestled in the cradle of Eiler. Like the dirt and rivers, the earth had turned gray and cracked, small and large fissures running all about as if Aleris was about to split open.

And the waves. The sound of the ocean.

Whenever she could, she had spent her waking mornings to the sound of the waves brushing in and out across the shoreline. But that had been gone for weeks. Where the oceans did not dry out, they became frozen solid and too difficult for anyone to break through. Water was scarce or barely attainable at all. Wish couldn't afford the luxury of baths, as most couldn't, but the dirt had almost become second nature.

Wish was also sure she was hungry and what rations she did have were dwindling. Looking out across the horizon, where the sky and ocean met in one bleak line, Wish wondered if she could make it she left. Out there, with no safe haven in sight, would it have even been worth it? In any case, Wish had convinced herself she needed to stay. There were things she needed to do. Namely, she needed to try to start a fire again. Aleris needed warmth and light.

Pushing herself away from the ground, Wish stood without stretching her wings like she normally would have. They were bound and covered behind a heavy coat to prevent the cold from freezing them away. Soon though, with the rate the temperature was constantly dropping, she assumed even that wouldn't help protect them. She donned the same long sleeved shirt, leather pants, boots and gloves. At her hip, attached to a belt, was her rapier which she always kept with her these days, though Wish imagined if she had to use it, she wouldn't be able to pick the lightweight sword up.

Underneath the jacket and shirt tucked safely away was the emerald and jade tree pendant Aurora had given her. The shimmer of the gems was one of the few bright things left in Aleris, but Wish barely took it out. Partially out of fear someone else would see it and partially because it was a reminder of Aurora's absence. When this whole thing had started, Wish had prayed to Aurora so long and frequently that her knees became bruised and scratched. Still, the goddess never said a word back and Wish was eventually forced to abandon the temple.

The people had become angry. The great oak that was once in Aurora's sanctuary had been cut down; people hoped it would produce a magical effect that would give them a fire to shy away the cold. It didn't. The rest of the temple had been desecrated. Stone was pushed over, flora was ruined and any faithful of the clergy that tried to defend Aurora were slain and in some cases, were cut open and eaten for they had just become a food source.

She was chased herself, hunted even. Mostly this stopped after a while though and Wish assumed it was because everyone else was dying. No matter what they tried. Those resorting to things like cannibalism or theft or vandalism as a way to attempt to prolong their lives were eventually met with the same fate as everyone else.

This whole religious persecution was not just met with Aurora's faithful, but with the other gods of Aleris as well. What little news there was these days, Wish had heard that people on the other continents had reacted in much the same manner. Wish had come to the conclusion that Aurora had probably died off and Elysia as well. Though Aleris was mostly quiet, with a connection to most living things, Wish could hear people dying. Day after day, she listened to the sounds of those passing, shouting in agony and anger. There was no sadness to death; just pain and bitterness. People wanted revenge, but they had nowhere to seek it. This cacophony, suffice to say, gave little room for sleep.

As she turned to face her home, Wish took in the ruined landscape that had become familiar. Part of the house had collapsed and many of the trees surrounding it were cut down; this was done by herself and others wandering through. The destruction to the forest surrounding her plots of land was little in comparison to the rest of the Aleris though. People all over were just trying to keep warm and though these efforts were futile - the cold hardly ever allowed for fire - Wish could not blame anyone for trying.

There were books scattered across the ground in front of her house, tossed in wild abandon. Some books had pages ripped out in frustration while others sat open. With the loss of the sun and no stars in sight, Wish's healing ability had become barren. She wasn't sure if she could produce any sort of magic, but she had to try and make fire, whether it came from an unknown ability or by traditionally building one. Wish had to keep the baby warm and alive. Deanna might come back eventually; Sharay might come back. Wish could not afford to let either of them down. Ironically considering her previous nature as a healer, her role as a mother had failed twice thus far. This time she would not fail.

Wish stepped into her house, ducking around fallen beams and went into the one room in the house where it felt safe. There in the corner was a crib with a chair sitting beside it. Wish sat down on this chair and reaching into the crib, gathered up an empty blanket into her arms. There was nothing there, but Wish had convinced herself there was. Wish could hear the little heartbeat and feel the small breaths the child took. On occasion, laughter would surface and bubble out, and Wish thought there was nothing bad happening to Aleris at the moment.

"Don't worry, Regan," Wish said. "I'll make fire. It will be warm again soon. Promise."

For as long as I could remember (now that I could remember again), I've never been one to run away from something. Ok, maybe that was a lie. I've been known to run and hide when the situation required it for my health. This however, hadn't been one of those times. To put it simply, I was scared. I'd been gone from Aleris for such a long time I was scared of what I'd find out there in the rest of the world if I left. I was in my own private sanctuary. Of course it was one partly created for me by a psychopathic, sexually deviant, sadomasochistic demon hellbent on my humiliation and destruction...but still...any port in a storm right?

I knew that I'd left a lot of things behind when I went off with Quinn to destroy the same demon that I was dealing with currently. He'd (Quinn) been a friend, who had asked for a favor, and to be quite honest, I thought it'd only take a few hours, maybe a day at tops. It ended up taking a lot longer than that. And as luck, fate, kismet, whatever you want to call it, would have it, time passed by differently in the realm we entered than it did in this one. I had people I needed to make amends with here. Well, at least one person. That one person was why I was still here, in Walter's town, going through the motions.

"So, Victor, or do you prefer to be called Walter now?" came a voice from behind me. I turned, snapped out of my self-loathing thoughts to see an elderly man behind me who's name I couldn't remember, but I knew I was supposed to be cleaning his hut for. "Is this time being charged to me or do I get the 'My cleaner is a lazy bastard' discount?"

I blinked. There was a time that I was Victor Sage, Wizard, Investigator. Now I was Victor Sage, Cleaner. But looking down at this little man in front of me, I was feeling the familiar twinges. A wise man once said that Wizards are subtle and quick to anger. Well, he had it at least partly right, and that anger was building now. Fuck subtle.

"I'm sorry Mister...Whatever your name is. I'm Victor Sage, and I don't clean up any other man's mess. I've got my own to clean." And with that I left the run down little shack, flinging the door open and breathed in the fresh air. I was me again, and the first thing I was going to do was, go back inside and get my staff. I'd forgotten it inside. I poked my head back into the old man's shack and gave him a sheepish grin. "Sorry..." I said and grabbed my staff, leaving again, this time a little less dramatic.

The problem I now faced, of course was that I had no idea where she was. How did one go about finding someone when they didn't have any of their possessions or anything linking them to that person? Magic was fickle like that. It needed something from you to give something back. So, I set off to the Capitol City. That was where I last saw her. That was were I'd start.

Of course, as soon as I packed up what supplies I thought I'd need on my trip, Armageddon struck. I almost didn't realize that the night was going on for much longer than it was supposed to. It took me double checking a few times before I knew that I'd actually been traveling for almost a whole day in the darkness. This wasn't natural either. I was a bit rusty, but using my second sight, I felt the 'wrongness' of what was going on around me. Things were about to get bad, really, really, bad. "I've got a bad feeling about this." I muttered to myself. I had to find her. I had to find Wish and make sure she was okay.

By the time I made it to Grand City, things were as bleak as they could be. The world had dissolved into almost nothingness. People had turned on each other, and abandoned their gods. Of course I didn't care about the gods, but the fact that people were turning on each other wasn't good. I was attacked more than I'd care to mention. The first few times I did everything in my power to make sure I didn't kill any of them. As time went on, and the attacks became more violent and more often, I did what I had to to make sure I got where I needed to go. The government of the City had crumbled and most buildings were in ruins. The only place I could think to go was to the castle. There had to be records there. Maybe I could find if Wish had any land that I could track her down to.

To say that the castle was what it used to be would have been a lie. It stood...barely. It was guarded by cannibals. They seemed to have been organized into a...group? Apparently even in the end times there were power hungry people who would bend others to their will. Tightening my grip on my staff I prepared myself for battle. Spells and chants started in my head without even thinking about it. I was Victor Sage again. I was myself. I was about to stop the bad guys, find the girl, and save the day. It was what I did. It was who I was. I fought the monsters. None of them really stood much of a chance. I don't say that with pride. It wasn't a proud moment for me. It was just a matter of fact.

I got to the records room, and stood there, frozen. The charred remains of the papers and books stared back at me. What was I going to do now? How was I going to find Wish now? I fell to my knees in the ash filled room and closed my eyes. I was Victor Sage, Wizard, Warrior, Investigator. I was Victor Sage, and I was hopeless.

I've survived this long by thinking on my feet. One time I was up against a warlock who decided he would wreck havoc on some small towns. They were small because they were close minded nitwits who would run any person who wasn't "normal" like themselves. The towns were completely empty of anyone with any type of powers, special abilities, or even the slightest hint of magical talents. So, in short, they were easy targets for someone like the warlock who was bent on torturing them. The problem was that while he was untrained, he was a hell of a powerful warlock. I was still young, and wasn't completely sure how this would play out.

So, in my zeal to stop him, I called him out. Face to face, no tricks, no sneaks, nothing but my will against his. Stupid me. He whipped my ass all over that field. As he towered over me I realized that he was going to kill me. I had to think fast, there was no way I could out power him with my magic. Then it occurred to me to use my other powers, I started talking. "You can kill me today, that's fine. Just know that while I may die today, your death will be much worse." I kept my tone calm and not threatening, but more of a concerned friend.

The warlock laughed at me, "Is that so? And who exactly would be coming to avenge you?"

Dead faced, which is tough when you're pretty sure you have internal bleeding, I said, "The Council." His pause and confused look gave me confidence. "Wait, you've never heard of The Council? The Council of Wizards who patrol and keep all magic users in check?" I inhaled deeply as if shocked. "If you kill a member of The Council they have no pity on you. They'll send the worse assassins and most powerful wizards they have to bring you in, and if you put up even the slightest fight, give them the slightest excuse, they will end you. And believe me when I say, it isn't pretty, and they enjoy it. I've seen it with my own eyes."

The ashen look on his face told me that I'd been fairly convincing with my story. His eyes left my face for a brief second and that was when I used my other power...I kicked him right between the legs. He fell, grasping his groin and wheezing. Quickly I stripped him of his focus objects and tied an enchanted rope I had crafted around his wrists to prevent him from casting. As I pulled him to his feet, he managed to ask, "Are you going to report me to The Council?"

I laughed, "No, I don't think I'll have to this time." to this day, I can't honestly remember if I ever told him that there was no Council, and that I'd just talked my way out of death. However, the towns were safe, I was able to take him into custody and everyone lived happily ever after.

Happily ever after. Yeah, that was exactly what I was experiencing right that second. The ashes I'd kicked up brought me back to my current problem. How was I going to find Wish if I didn't have the slightest idea where she was, nothing of her's that could lead me to her, and no one who could help me? I had to think outside the box. I had to come up with some oddball spell or tactic that would lead me to her. I had to...

Before I could finish that thought an arrow came from behind me and stuck into the wall just a few inches from where I stood. Nothing like near-death misses to motivate you to move. The next arrow hit almost exactly where my head had been just a second before I'd moved it. When it hit, I noticed it made an odd sound. I reached up and pulled it out of the wall, then ran. I ducked back out into the castle hallway and up the nearest flight of stairs. It was time to get out of here and I didn't have time to be subtle. I came around a corner and saw my out, a large window. I ran straight for it and jumped. As I did, I shifted into a rather large bird. I did still have my staff and newly stolen arrow to carry, not to mention my bag.

I flew until my wings were tired and I had to find a place to land. While I rested and shifted back to my normal form, I took a closer look at the arrow. There really wasn't anything special about the thing though. I noticed that it was a hollow shaft with an extremely sharp metal piece on the pointy end. I guess I just hadn't heard the hollow shaft before. I sighed and looked around me at the death and devastation around me. I had to find her. I had to...simplify. I'd been thinking of all these elaborate tricks and ways to get the information I needed. Now wasn't the time to be tracking down leads or beating information out of people. I had a perfectly good tracking spell, all it needed was something of Wish's...

I looked down at the arrow and closed my eyes. This was going to hurt. Using the metal tip of the arrow I pressed it into my chest, right above my heart. I sliced down until the hole was large enough to slide the shaft in. I broke off the arrowhead, leaving a jagged end on the shaft, which I shoved into the hole I'd just cut, and into my heart. I focused on my other abilities, I was a shifter, I could close the wound around the shaft...I just had to focus through the pain. This was something I'd been trained my whole life to do. Of course I'd never purposefully cut myself and stabbed my heart with a dirty, broken, hollow arrow shaft before. But what is life without changes?

Looking down at my chest I saw the shaft sticking out, blood was all over me, but the wound was sealed up around it. Gods it hurt. Faster than I thought it would, blood started flowing from the other end of the shaft. I cupped my hands under it and gathered it as I cast my location spell. Before I left Aleris to help Quinn I'd done something that I never had thought possible. I'd given my life over to a girl. A very special girl, who to this day, years later, still had it, whether she knew it or not. So I cast my simple spell, using the only thing of her's that I had...my life.

Blood had poured over my cupped hands at this point and the parts that had, upon completing the spell, started moving around me. It was like a bright red snake was moving around my legs, looking for the right way to go. Finally it started moving in one sure direction, and I followed. I kept the blood going cause it didn't take long for what had been spilled to freeze up and not move any more. I just hoped that she wasn't too far away, even a shifter wizard had his limitations and to be honest, I wasn't sure how much blood I could lose before I wouldn't be able to continue. See? Simple.

"I'm coming Wish." I muttered.

A breeze, warm and comforting, gently caressed Wish's skin. She couldn't remember feeling something so natural and wonderful. Her eyes opened, lashes slowly fluttering to reveal olive colored eyes that searched a cerulean colored sky dotted with white clouds. This was not the sky she recalled Aleris having. Furthermore, she was lying down in a field of tall wildflowers. She reached a hand up and touched the petals of one flower. A thought crossed her mind as she made to stand, the flowers brushing across her legs. She was dreaming.

Wish walked forward, letting the flowers graze against the palms of her hands. She did not get very far into her serene walk when she spotted ahead of her a hat that had been left in the field. She bent slightly to pick it up and with the brim held between her fingertips, Wish looked over the hat. It was a simple brown thing and Wish turned it over in her hands a few times to find some sign of its owner. There was no name written in the hat and no markings. In fact, there was nothing entirely special about it, but it looked so familiar as if she had seen it a great deal before. Wish closed her eyes to remember and bit the bottom of her lower lip.

This descent into her past and the pleasantness of the dream, however, was shattered as she felt her body hit the floor and a painful throbbing against her head. The flowers in the field around her burst; petals flying in disarray into the air as Wish tried to grasp what was going on. She came crashing back into Aleris, awakened with a start, as her face hit the cold ground. There was no gradual opening of her eyelids this time; they flew open and she saw there was broken porcelain around.

Ah, this is the Aleris I remember, Wish thought as she attempted to get up, her temples pounding and vision dizzy from the impact of a vase hitting the back of her head. It became apparent there were other voices in her house, two men to be exact though she couldn't make out the words they were saying just yet. In her confused state, she was able to grasp the fact that these men did not wander upon her house in good company. This was confirmed when she reached for her rapier at her waist and her arm was painfully twisted and then snapped broken. Wish cried out and dropped her rapier to the floor; had she been eating and not malnourished among other things, she might have been able to conjure up the reflexes to defend herself. But as it was, she was useless.

And Regan.

Wish turned to look back at Regan who was resting in her crib, but her line of sight was pulled away as she was yanked, by her broken arm, to her feet. She hung limply, her wrist gripped in the large hand of a man who, despite the realm's state of destruction, seemed to be doing well for himself. His hair was matted with dirt and tangled to his head and from what she could see, his body and parts of his face were patch worked with scars. He was tall, towering at least three feet above her 5'2 height, a brick wall of a man she had no idea how she was going to get away from. Yellow and blackened teeth grinned down at her. If she was able to see, Wish would have taken in that his accomplice was like in appearance. Instantly, the word "cannibals" came to mind and she was right.

"Don't worry, lass. We're just gonna rough ya up a bit before we slice ya ta little bits and make yer bony body inta a nice stew."

He let out a foul breathed laugh and leaned forward to run a tongue across her cheek. Wish recoiled at this, despite the effort it took with a mangled arm and tried to yank away from the man, aiming a kick to his knee. It was pitiful and she missed. Even if she had connected, Wish knew it wouldn't have made a difference. She was spun and her backside landed firmly against the man's chest as he lifted her up, his arms a vise grip across her torso. Eventually it dawned on him, that despite her struggle, her eyes were focused on the wooden cradle in the corner of the room.

"Somethin' in there we should know about?" he asked, nodding to the other man in the room. "Kick it over and see what she's hiding, eh?"

To her horror, Wish watched as the man's companion went over and with heavy booted foot, kicked the cradle with such force that it shattered into a mess of broken wood and splinters. Wish shouted out in protest and flailed, although she was having a hell of a time moving. Regan didn't cry though. Wish thought it was odd. For all Wish's protesting, the man finally decided to silence her and when he put a hand over her mouth, she bit down hard with as much force as she muster with her jaw and drew blood. Lots of it. She took a sizeable chunk out of his hand that would have made vampires proud of her. Blood covered her face as the man dropped her and howled in agony. Wish dove to grab Regan in the debris ignoring the pain in her arm and forgot the second man. He stopped her with little effort and threw Wish out of her house.

Wish rolled across the ground, hitting stone and wood as she went. Thankfully her wings had been bound and covered underneath her sorry excuse for clothing. Eventually she came to a stop after being tossed in the direction of a large boulder. Wish lay a few feet away from her house, hearing the sound of heavy foot fall and cursing coming towards her way. Shaking, she used the boulder to support herself and with her good arm, tried to stand. Wish hit the ground, her face once more meeting the frigid, gray earth. She looked ahead of her. Her sight was blurred with tears, and though she didn't feel as if she was crying, Wish imagined it was her body wanting to give up and her fighting against it.

Through this obscured vision, Wish noticed something snake-like and red was heading in her direction. What now? she thought. She followed the serpentine line as far as she could to an area where the woods were still thick with trees and saw a dark figure sifting out of the woods. It was then that she realized the crimson trail was not a snake at all, but blood.

How strange...

Wish reached out and let her fingertips touch the blood. She screamed, not in pain, but memories, forgotten and buried, flooded back into her consciousness. Wish did not even feel herself being drug off in the opposite direction.
