I have been playing with an Account Link mod for phpbb forums which, for those of us who have multiple characters, it will allow us to easily switch accounts instead of logging in and out. I am hoping to get it ready for this weekend, but no promises as I'm still trying to get the mod to work how I want it to. Basically, the mod functions like this:
- From the user control panel, there will be a new item on the list called "Manage Linked Accounts".
- From this screen, you can link a master account to another account. You would put in your master account password and then the user name and password of the account you want to link.
- After linking an account, there will be a drop down on the forum that says "Switch user". From this drop down, you can quickly switch who you want to post as or what account you want to edit. This works the same as if you were logging in and out, but it's a much quicker switch.
There are some things you must be aware of though, such as:
- If you try to switch accounts in the middle of posting and have a post open, you will lose any text you have entered. I am assuming this is the same for writing any text such as posts and PM messages on the forum. Please be sure you are posting on the correct account before you start posting. Or if you are writing a long post, always make sure to type it out and save it in something like notepad or Word.
- If you post something and realize you have selected the wrong account to post as, you can't edit the post author. Instead, you would have to delete the post and re-post under the correct account. Although the accounts are linked, normal user accounts do not have the permission to change post authors. This is an admin permission only. Sorry!
Now that I have all that out, this is how I would like to setup Account Linking on the forum:
- I would like everyone who wants to link accounts to make an OOC account. Essentially this account would be used as the master account to link all your other accounts to. We should also start using these accounts for things like positing in the OOC section or the suggestion box. Basically, anything OOC related. I would like to make this adjustment because then myself and the admins can better tell how many IC posts we have from characters and give out things like awards and other fun stuff for how much IC posting people do.
- After you make an OOC account, you will be able to link accounts. I am trying to set it so that you can only link accounts from your OOC account.
- I am planning on moving any OOC posts made under characters to the OOC account.
That's pretty much it! That being said, there's no reason why you can't go ahead and make your OOC account now. If you do, post here and let me know what it is! Thanks!
