The rush of wind blew snow everywhere, bending the younger trees and assaulting the older ones. A devastating roar deafened the ears of the stag, confusing him. Everything was white and moving. Out of nowhere, huge teeth clamped on to him. Pain surged through his entire body, so fierce it almost numbed him. Bleating and trying to dig his antlers into whatever grabbed him, he failed to notice that his hooves were dangling. Quickly looking down, he realized what had been hunting him. Just tree tops could be seen, and a clear view of the dragon that gripped him seized him up.

The cold rush of wind was a signature move for the young dragon. Confusing prey was easy, it was fitting between the trees that seemed to hinder her hunting abilities. Though she managed, she really had to reach to grab the buck. She leaped back into the air with the stag struggling to free himself. It was a bit annoying, the grey-brown antlers slamming into her nose, but it caused no pain so she ignored it. A curt smile played on her lips when the stag peered at the shrinking ground and froze. Every animal does that. Like if they don't move, they won't be dropped. Tilting her wings, the dragon soared through the clouds, returning to a overhanging cliff on the side of the mountain. Dropping the stag from a great height, she gave him the gift of a swift death. A crack of bone could be heard, but she ignored it. Such is life.

Landing next to the mangled corpse, she grabbed it with her talons. Laying down, she proceeded to consume her breakfast. The stag was tiny compared to her, and it barely took two swallows to eat him, bones and all. Spitting out the antlers, she grabbed them and walked to a smaller cave. Dropping them, she admired the growing collection of treasures she has acquired. She has never stolen anything, but traded and bought. Some dragons like gold, she likes natures treasures. Pelts, antlers, you name it. Returning to the edge of the cliff, she settled down and watched the land before her.

He had been hunting for some time.
It had been days since last his traps had yielded anything save the fallen snow and the collapse of twigs.
Hungry, exhausted, and alone, Aldwine had wandered through the snow-wastes, silently stocking the stag at a distance - neither saying anything.
For a day and a half, the two had walked through the waste; the haggard man and the buck desperately hoping that it's pursuer would simply tire before it did.
Aldwine had hoped - thought - that the stag would tire first; but as a sudden peal of snow obscured his vision - it was gone, and he found himself alone amongst the broken pines and the freezing air.

Turning his face to the skies, he felt a million curses slide from his lips. Lips that grew more numb with every passing minute. Holding his fingers to the snow, he tried to remember what the village witch had taught him - but though the snow glowed ember-red, nothing blossomed and nothing appeared. The only occurrence was the realization, almost funny to him, that he could no longer feel his fingertips through the worn fur-trimmed gloves he wore.

"If there are any gods - if ever Elysia has respected or heard my prayers, I say this! Grant me something, anything! I will prove myself... I do not wish to die! I will not let myself die..! Show yourself! Damnit, show yourself, be you goddess or figment!..."

Sinking into the snow and feeling it kiss his wan skin, the woodsman wondered if this was truly to be the end. He would not accept it - even as angry tears rolled down his cheeks. He had chosen to settle in this distant plot of land to study on his own - and he had too much to learn. Managing to raise himself to his feet, it was than that he saw it - distant and majestic.

A dragon.

Shaking in fear and the remains of his defiance, the shivering hunter stood firm - perhaps unable to move, perhaps simply unable to take his eyes off of the incredible creature so far above him amongst the cliff face. It was impossible it saw him at this distance. Impossible. And yet... Spreading his arms wide, Aldwine took a single step into the snow, feeling it sink up to his knee - and shouted to the wind. Whether the dragon heard or not, only she could say.

She laid for some time, forelegs crossed, talons clinking against the cold stone under her body. She stared at the lone hunter, amused that he trembled but held strong. Though almost a mile away, his image was clear. Her grey, streaked eyes were trained on him, picking out the small bag of flesh and bone from the trees. She hasn't had many relations with humans, or anything human like. She kept to herself, but her growing curiosity dared her to speak with this.....being.

Pinning her wings to her sides, she slipped from the cliff, closing her eyes and judging her fall by the wind that rushed against her. At the last moment, her wings unfolded, catching her and lifting her up. She took her time, enjoying her time in the air. Sweeping down, she landed in a tree next to the being. The tree groaned under her weight, bending and swaying until it succumbed to the dragon.

Who are you? What are you?

Her voice echoed in her skull, and she sent it into the beings. She huffed at the being, the scent filling her nose. He smelled like the woods, fire smoke and cold. Noticing the shivering skin that was shuffling back under the massive amount of clothing, she tilted her head. This being was cold. Well she cant have it dying. She started to knock down branches, careful not to let the wood fall on the being. Climbing down, she gathered the wood, digging in the snow until she found the frozen ground. She stacked the wood and gathered herself. She aimed for the makeshift fire pit and sent out a small ball of fire at it. Climbing back into the tree, she motioned towards the fire.

Warm yourself.

It seemed unreal - the dragon growing closer until she perched upon a tree, as naturally as a hare might leg across the tundra or a human might find their way to town.

He shivered as her voice echoed and danced inside his mind - the sensation was unfamiliar, strange - but not unpleasant. As her words faded, he tried to form a response - but what little hedge magic he was capable of refused to answer him now. Perhaps it was the cold. The fire felt warm and enticing as he realized how close he'd been to death, and he sat near it, color slowly returning to his face.

While he tried to gather his words, he hoped a little of his gratitude showed on his face. His eyes darted to the ground, watching as snow receded and grew thick with ash - then to the Dragon; he wondered if she was watching him, watching her. Perhaps Elysia had sent the beast to save him. Perhaps, he mused wryly, it planned to store him for the winter. Regardless - he was alive for now, and that was enough. He was grateful.

Letting the his fur hood slide down to his shoulders, Aldwine tried once more to Speak, the way the Dragon had - but again, found nothing but echoes and memories. His teeth no longer chattering, he resigned himself to speaking in the way of humans.

"I am called Aldwine. My village no longer has any stargazers, no witches or healers. I came out here to live for a year and day, hoping that when I returned, I might know how best to sing. It has only been a month."

He knew that answer could not count for everything - every question the great beast had. She looked to his mind equal parts intrigued and bemused, though he had no clue what lurked behind those irises like cloudy skies. He hoped that even if he could not speak as she had, she heard the emphasis on the spell-songs of his people, the importance of his task. Casting his eyes back to the fire, he smiled slightly - but genuinely.

"Thank you. Were it not for you, I would be dying - or dead. What... Let me ask you the same question, then. What brings you to this place? Who are you, dragon - Do you have a name, that I could thank you by it?"

This....human, yes it was indeed a human, kept silent as it huddled near the fire that the white dragon created. White...it amused her to think that even she can not ever be the perfect white that the snow or clouds can. She is more a pearl, with teal highlights. As she sat, perched, a faint clanking sound echoed from her. Was it from the chain that was locked around her neck, or was it her numerous piercings through her ears and nose? One can't quite be sure. Her eyes were focused on the human, and a toothy smirk emerged when she noticed him stealing glances at her.

Sliding back down, she made her way to the other side of the crackling fire. The flames seemed to make the dragon glow, and her grey eyes mirrored the dancing element. Settling down, she received a better view of the humans face from this angle, rather than the top of his head and cloaks.

Singing? I can tell this is a very important quest you are set to endure. But singing doesn't come from the woods, nor does it come from teachers or professors. Elisya plants it in hearts ser. Worthy hearts.

Her mind reeled back to an old song that her mother had sung to her. She started to hum it's flowing notes, and she let the song float into the mind of the human.

Shall I go walk the wood so wild,
Wand'ring, wand'ring here adn there,
As I was once full sore beguild,
Alas! for love! I die with woe.
Wearilky blows the winter wind,
Wand'ring, wand'ring here adn there,
My heart is like a striken hind,
Alas! for love I die with woe.

The song was well fitting for the human and his quest. As her voice dimmed, so did the fire. emeralds of blazing coals sat sparkling at the bottom of the pit. Using her spiked tail, she pushed more wood into the coals, creating sparks that rose towards heaven.

Now that he was warm and aware, Aldwine took time to observe the dragon's scales. The pearlescent tone entranced him and for a half-minute he wanted to ask if he could place his hand to them. Still, it was obvious his companion had noticed his curiosity - and didn't seem to mind. He smiled, and laughed heartily - a forgotten feeling he had not remembered.

Realizing he must look all the more careworn huddling by his fire, he slowly pulled himself to his feet. The rustling of fabric caught against the worn weapons he had carried with him - though they seemed nothing compared to her talons, or teeth - or presence. He listened intently as she spoke, the burnished orange of his eyebrows knit in thought.

"What you say rings true, Dragon. More than that, it fits what I know to be true. But I -"

At first, he had wanted to say he was not sure if he was worthy, or what worthiness truly meant.

Yet all the thoughts he had melted as she sang.

His eyes shut to hide the trace of tears, inelegant and clumsily concealed. Like all songs, it was as personal as any confession - to hear it was almost too much for him. Running a hand through the mess of his copper hair, strewn with the few remnants of ash from the fire, he examined the dragon again. Was she ancient, or young by the years of her kind..?

The light teal underscale of her chest made him wonder if she was the latter. And yet still, she seemed to know so much -

"T'is a beautiful song, dragon. I would hear more - though Elysia has already given me much solace this day - as have you."

Rolling up the several sleeves that covered his arms, and wondering at the scars he had earned, the woodsman remained quiet for some time before he spoke.

"It would almost seem this meeting was meant to be. At the very least - I must repay you for your kindness done unto me. I've - "

Coughing and hiding the slight red of his cheeks as the cold and nothing more, Aldwine continued.

"I could not help but notice the piercings and chain which you wear. I am no metalsmith, but I can carve wood, and scrimshaw bone. I feel I am not quite as independent as I thought I was, and that you have much I would learn. More than that - This fire and your song has reminded me how I miss the company of others. Could... I would enter a pact, of sorts, lady. Should you think of a suitable price, obscure as it might be - I would pay it gladly."

Sighing and watching his breath hang and mix with the smoke and cold in the air, Aldwine smiled to himself, staring into her eyes. They were grey, like his - but they shone with many hints of color, like possibilities.

She tilted her head when he stopped talking. Oh, if only she could take thoughts as easily as she gives them. She wouldn’t have to wonder as much. But wonder is…well it’s a wondrous thing. It is what brought her to this small clearing to satisfy her curiosity. She thought about it. Her curiosity could get her into trouble. It was almost fate that she was safely curled next to a fire with a human that looked the size of a cat to her.

You question your worth. I say you, keep your heart clean, and your soul cleaner. You will find your worth as long as you keep to Elysia.

She listened quietly, her eyes never leaving his. They were a darker shade of grey, his eyes. They did nothing for his red hair and his tan skin. The scars did that for them. She noticed as they wound through the hair that grew from his limps. As he subdued his cough, she smiled. Humans did such unusual things.

The chain is to remind me of the great burden is it being the youngest of my clan. The piercings were a choice.

She didn’t know why she felt like she needed to explain the causes behind her choice of jewelry. She chuckled as he spoke of a pact.

And what would you have me do? Labor for a business or become a private taxi? All for a cost? No, I consider you a friend, and if you have things to do, than call upon your Dragon friend. I will not charge you.

Her voice was soft, almost like she was talking to a child. And to her, the hunter was a baby. A blimp on the years she has seen. And yet, she feels young, full of vigor and energy. She still has half a century before she is fully grown, and she still stands taller than any manmade structure.

There had been a saying ins his village - it came to mind suddenly and unbidden. There need be no greater purpose in friendship but that. It is better to have spoken well, and listened better then for all the words of the world to have come forth from your lips.

... But still he wished for the ability to speak as she did. No - he would learn it, or try to; for one, speaking through voice alone felt suddenly clumsy, as clumsy as the first steps one makes on feet barely steady enough to walk. One cannot stay bound to their cradle forever. Pursing his lips as he smiled, he wondered if it meant the same thing to the Dragon - though no doubt flickered across his face any longer.

"You speak with a wisdom I should try to emulate. In my village - Among most settlements of my kind, it is customary to assume no-one does a thing without having something to trade, or to pay. Perhaps I have forgotten what it is like to have friends, in this day and age."

His smile softened as he realized - was the Dragon staring at his scars? Once again, he felt a little self-conscious. They must look like mild bruises to a dragon; the scrawlings of a tiny species. Some had come from Elysia's touch, and others from the wildness of the hunt - but he tried to wear them as well she made the snow and sky her own.

Still, what was that she had said about her clan..? Of burdens and things. He knew not what the word meant, to her - so he asked cautiously, pausing enough that she might choose to interrupt should she not desire the topic. As he did so, he occasionally glanced to the coals, stirring them with a fallen branch that grew as dark as the little fire danced.

"By what manner are you considered a burden, Dragon? To my eyes you seem free - though I must admit some of it that must be my jealousy for the freedom that only wings can grant."

Laughing a little, he motioned to the great expanse of her wings - clearly admiring their breadth even as their was a hint of sadness reflected in his as he stared at them, tucked to her sides.

"Where I hail from, we attempt to take care of those younger than ourselves - it is our burden, as they are still growing. Is your burden one of choice, or one that others have placed upon you..? As for the jewelery yourself - though it is not my place to say, I feel your choice was well made."

Splitting into a toothy grin that only grew wider as a thought occurred to him, Aldwine removed the stick he had been stirring from the fire - and began to draw in the freshly fallen snow, staring up at the Dragon with an excitement that perhaps matched her own - or to her might seem infinitely childish, he could not tell. He drew shapes - rooks, their wings wide - rivers, and trees whose branches had long since collapsed around them.

"Should I succeed in my mission - I had hoped that I might return home, and tattoo my skin to show that I have become a guide that others could trust to tell stories, and remember our past."

He paused through one drawing - halfway complete - and let the stick fall to the ground as a sudden thought struck him and his expression grew more serious.

"I suppose - I am not yet considered an adult yet; not in spirit. Is it like that with you and your own kind, Dragon?.."

The conversation between Aldwine and Eámanë would be momentarily interrupted. Although they were off the beaten path of Arthuran so-to-speak, it was not a road that was untraveled. Around the trees came a man singing loudly and leading a large ox that had black, shaggy fur and a set of strong looking horns that curved elegantly above its head. At first, his tune was full of joy and merriment, despite the harsh Arthurian environment that surrounded him (and it is worth noting that he did not smell of alcohol). But upon seeing Aldwine with a dragon, the man ceased his singing all at once.

The ox stopped in its tracks and the man's mouth hung open in what could only be considered utter surprise. However, after the brief shock wore off, the man moved quicker than Aldwine and Eámanë might have expected. The ox was laden with supplies and goods and amoung this bounty, the man drew forth a broom and swung his body around so that he was situated in front of his ebony colored ox. Then, he did what any man wouldn't do in his situation and brandished his broom at Eámanë as if it were some sort of mighty and intimidating spear.

"Back, dragon beast! Don't ya dare think about eating my Betsy Loo!"
