Our Voices

"In the meantime," Elijah began, finishing the sentence for the man next to him, "get rid of Shimmer Town, then the rest of Elved and then... Aleris."

"And the children?"

Elijah offered a shrug. "Appetizers?"

She finished with her story and looked at him. He knew her life had been hard. However, he hadn't realized it had been that bad. Philippa looked so sad standing there in front of him. Lysander did the only thing he could. He grabbed her and pulled her close to him in a tight embrace. "We're going to make this right Pippa. I promise. I'm a lot harder to kill then Charlie was." he offered her a quick smile, "I'm just too hard headed to die."

Their first step in all of this, was to find out where Kristolf was staying in Aleris. After that he'd need to find out what his resources here were. How much protection he had, how many special people he had working for him. Were there more people like the fire user? He almost hoped so. Otherwise this might be a bit too easy.

Of course when you started thinking that things were going to be easy, that was when you fell into the trap of being overly confidant. Lysander didn't want that. He'd been there before with his sister and he wouldn't let something like that happen again.

Looking Philippa in the face he gave her his best reassuring smile. "We're going to get this guy Pip. We just need a starting place. Is there anything you can think of that would help us figure out where he might be staying? Once we know that we can plan an assault."

His last sentence brought him up short for a moment, could it really be defined as an assault if it was just the two of them? He could track down Dravvin or Odin and see if either of them would be willing to help. Of course there was his extended family as well, but he didn't feel right asking Emily or her children to do something like this. They'd done enough rescuing him and his sister before. Then there was Isa. There was no way he would bring her into this. Apparently that settled that. He didn't really have anyone else to ask for help. It was just the two of them.

"I don't suppose you'd be willing to stay here while I went and brought Kris back to you would you?" he asked, in a last ditch effort to keep her from the fighting. It might actually be easier for him if he didn't have to worry about her getting hurt as well. Who knew? Maybe she'd stay here?

”We’re going to make this right, Pippa.”

That was what Lysander promised, and that’s what she so desperately wanted to believe. It was hard, though. She had spent the more recent half of her life constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. Still, the way his arms were around her made it a little easier to believe. For the first time in a really long time, she didn’t feel so alone. His comment about being too stubborn to die got a small laugh out of her. She was pretty sure that the same had been said about her a time or two.

She tilted her head upward so that she could look into his face. Then, she was nodding at his question about where to start… where he the Duke might be staying… “There’s a festival in a town to the West of here. Lasts for near two fortnights. He ne’er misses it… always said he enjoyed havin’ a bit of anonymity or something…” She crinkled her nose, knowing now that it was about the only way he could seek out new victims since surely all the girls who lived near his grand keep must know something of his terrible nature, even if they were too afraid to speak up.

“It’s our best shot. He won’t be as heavily guarded, and he’ll… he’ll be on the prowl.” She had her own plan formulating in her mind. “And he still thinks of me as a frightened little girl too scared to confront him…”

At Lysander’s suggestion… his attempt to keep her from the fray, she leaned toward him; an arm snaking about his neck as her mouth sought out his. It was a kiss that didn’t end until they were both breathless. When it was done, though, she was smirking. “Not a chance… ‘cuz I’ve got a plan, but ye’re not gonna like it.”

Things had happened. He'd gone shopping, and so had Pippa. However Pippa's trip was much more...eventful than his. Apparently she'd made a new friend and gotten some new clothes. So here they were, new clothes, new weapons, new friends.

The night after Philippa returned from her shopping trip, Lysander found himself unable to sleep. His mind was reeling. Pippa's plan was to steal one of the duke's ships and sail it back to meet him head on. How they were supposed to not only take over a ship, but sail it all that way on their own, he wasn't sure.

Quietly he slipped out of bed and looked back to make sure that he hadn't woken Phil. He smiled to himself. At times he couldn't help but still think of her as "Phil" not "Philippa" or "Pippa". It was silly, but Phil was how he met her. The eldest Kirk leaned down and placed a soft kiss on her head. Then he grabbed some pants and a shirt, and silently left his room.

Once outside their newly shared space, Lysander quickly dressed and made his way outside. There was a dark place behind the inn that he'd used before when he needed to do some private exercises. As he reached his normal spot, he closed his eyes and focused his will.

Ice formed on his arms, starting just below his elbows, and going down to his fingers. It thickened into a rock hard shell, basically forming a gauntlet on both his arms. He did the same thing with his legs, just below the knees, going all the way down. With his arms and legs weighted he started going through various stances. To anyone watching it was obvious that he'd done this many times before, to the point that it almost seemed "old hat" as it were.

He did his exercises for several hours. Not only was it a great training tool, but it wore him out as well, even his stress didn't seem to be able to keep him up much longer. As he began cooling down, the ice melted slowly, as if it too was tired and slowly drained of energy. He was walking back around the front of the inn before they were fully gone, but by the time he got to the stoop they had melted completely.

Lysander wouldn't have any trouble sleeping now. Hopefully he'd be able to get back in bed without waking Philippa.

Phil had not explained her full plan yet to Lysander; mostly because she was still working it out herself. He needn’t have worried that she was going to go charging in though. While she did rather like a grand entrance, she also benefitted most from the element of surprise. She never would have gotten through life as successfully as she had if she hadn’t been… well… sneaky; like any good rogue. She was used to always being on her toes and always watching her back. She wouldn’t do herself any favors rushing in for some full frontal attack.

And if she was being honest with herself, the ship wasn’t so much a necessity as it was something she wanted. Maybe it was vindictive of her, but she felt she was owed something, when all was said and done, for her pain and suffering. One of his ships scheduled into port was just too good an opportunity to pass up she figured. Once it got her, she figured she would case out the situation… the way of things on the ship. It could very well be that the men on board were unhappy with their lot, in which case she might be able to stir up some mutiny. That would certainly be the easiest way because if she managed to get control over the ship, she might very well have herself a crew. If they were from the Duke’s lands, they may very well have sisters and even sweethearts who had suffered at Kristolf’s hands, which could make them right sympathetic to her plight.

Anyway, Lysander would find that he was not so fortunate in returning to bed without waking her. He wouldn’t even make it back inside. She was all too easily roused from sleep; especially since her inner clock still operated on a traditional naval watch schedule. So, that kiss to her forehead had been enough to do it. She had tried to lay a-bed for a while after he left, but the longer he was gone, the more she worried and the less likely she was to be able to get back to sleep. So, she’d snuck downstairs and had eventually found him out in that preferred space of his. She didn’t interrupt him, and when it became clear that he was winding down, she’d slunk back inside where she waited. By the time he came up the stairs, she was leaning against the doorframe of their room, an eyebrow arched. “Trouble sleeping then?” Way to state the obvious, Girl. She muttered to herself.

“You can talk to me, y’know, if you’re having doubts… about the plans… or… or us or anything. I certainly wouldn’t blame you as I know I’ve not been rather forthcoming about the plans—half baked as they currently are in my head. And well, I wouldn’t blame you at all if you were beginning to think that I’m not worth all this trouble. Maybe once I get this all sorted and things’ll calm down. I could settle in and become just a peaceful merchant or something, carrying cargo from one place to another in my ship. No more running or constantly looking over my shoulder…” Her eyes had closed for a moment as she thought on that, a slight smile curving her mouth before she was looking at him again; her own worries plain enough. “Either way, though, you’ve given me the courage to face this thing… to start living instead of just surviving. I… I just thought you should know that.” And with all of that said, she would push open the door and let him step inside, knowing how exhausted he must be. She, on the other hand, was very much awake, but that was okay. She really needed to sit down and make out her actual plans. Maybe then, they would both feel better about this whole thing.
