Their family had always had secrets. Certain things about their father and the history of the Desiderio's that simply were never spoken of. Topics of conversation that had been discouraged and eventually dismissed as unimportant until such things were no longer even wondered about. Their father was a master of keeping secrets and as a result much of their families history, including their father's, was shrouded in mystery. They did not even know how their father had amassed the grand fortune he had, though many times they speculated on it. The oddity to her was that no one seemed to question the strangeness of their family and if they did, they didn't bother pursuing it considering most of it occurred before their time, so to speak. As a young girl she'd noticed the strangeness of it all but with the fickle attention span of a child it had been quickly forgotten in the face of other girlhood trials and tribulations.

She was older now, though. The family's Padrona. And while the many mysteries might not necessarily be her business she was determined to make them her business, at least until she got the answers she was looking for. Which mystery to attempt to unravel first, though, was the quandary she faced at the moment. Her first inclination was to dig until she found out what had occurred to cause the rift between her father and their Aunt Cahira, his sister. She and Antonio had been practically raised with Cahira at her Kumpania, she being the only mother figure either of them had had growing up. For there now to be such a breach between the two sides of the family was distressing to her, to say the least. She knew why Cahira was upset with her..but her father? She had no idea what had happened there and considering all the things Morlis had done over the years that Cahira had turned a blind or uncaring eye too, whatever it was had to be good. Or really really bad. She should make a point of speaking to her cousin Ballade, Cahira's son. He had mentioned something in passing about Cahira being upset over his decision to join his uncle's side of the family. Maybe she had said something to him about it all.

She may well have gone off at that very moment to speak to Ballade about it when the arrival of a letter that appeared out of thin air over her desk stopped her short. It wasn't uncommon at all for the members of their family to communicate in such a manner as they had a history of traversing multiple realms, dimensions, and time lines but she knew instantly who it was from and the fact that only one member of their family (other than her father and his concubines of course) was missing from the residence in Aleris had nothing to do with it. Nearing the desk her eyes passed over the familiar script of her little sister, Carese, and her assumptions were confirmed.

She and Antonio had been away much of the time the three younger siblings were growing up but she and Carese had always maintained a steady correspondence, a fact that was not common knowledge among the rest of the family. It wasn't as if they were deliberately keeping their closer relationship secret or anything, it just wasn't something that either of them had thought to make a big deal out of. Many considered Carese to be standoffish and aloof, perhaps even a little cold, but Sarine knew different. She had a sarcastic sense of humor, no doubt about that, and could be quite biting when called for, but that wasn't all there was to her younger sister. Not by a long shot.

Forgetting her earlier mission to seek out Ballade she dropped into the chair behind her desk and drew the letter to her, the wax seal broken and the letter pulled free in a matter of seconds. Voraciously she scanned her sisters letter, seeking any clue as to why she would choose to remain in Italy while the rest of the younger generation of their family migrated to Aleris. Naturally she'd questioned the younger woman but thus far Carese had been quite deft at side stepping providing any genuine answers.

The letter was filled with the typical stuff. Carese spoke of spending the majority of her time away from the Villa seeing to her own pursuits. She had little to no interest in spending any time around her mother, Tessa, and never had. To be fair Tessa wasn't exactly maternal. She barely registered that she'd given birth so it was safe to say she was less than nurturing and had had little to nothing to do with the upbringing of the twins. Still, Salome felt a connection to her mother, a desire to be around her at times even if Tessa was oblivious to their connection. Carese had never had that. The fact that Tessa was indifferent to her children had never bothered the older of the twins as Carese had always been rather indifferent to Tessa as well.

Though nothing in the letter was particularly unusual something began niggling at the back of Sarine's mind, a thought that had played about her subconscious since the first night the siblings had gathered in the new Villa in Aleris. She'd often teased Salome and Carese about being the worst twins ever, having little to no connection let alone the super psychic connection twins were supposed to have. They were sisters, they loved one another of course, but they were completely and utterly different. Not just in personality but in appearance as well and neither had ever had any real need to be around her twin. Salome had had no problem up and leaving Carese behind to move to Aleris and to Sarine's knowledge they had had no contact since then, Sarine being the only sibling Carese kept in constant contact with.

Sure, it was funny when they joked about one of the twins being a changeling, but the more she thought about it the more she began to wonder if they weren't at least partially right. No, she didn't believe Carese had been left by faeries, but it was entirely possible she wasn't who their father said she was. She was a Desiderio, the blood in her veins could not be denied, all the siblings could sense their own, but something wasn't right...something wasn't how their father said it was. Not that it would be the first time he had kept secrets from the rest of his family, he was full of them, but something of this magnitude? Would he, could he, do something this drastic? After only a seconds consideration she nodded firmly to herself. Yes he could and yes he would, if he thought it was for the best. Their father loved his children devotedly and would do anything to protect them. To him the end justified the means when it came to his children, no matter how fucked up others might view his decisions. His heart was good, mostly, his execution was just flawed, usually.

Engrossed in her thoughts she let nearly half an hour slip by her before she even realized it. All other family secrets were put on the back burner in her mind as she pondered the mystery of her little sister. Just how she should go about unraveling this little puzzle, provided she was even right and wasn't just being horribly dramatic, was the first thought on her mind. Should she mention anything to Carese about it? No..not just yet. If she was wrong there was no need to upend the younger woman's life. Salome then? It could be just as distressing for her as it was for Carese and she didn't know anything more than the rest of them anyway.

There had to be a way to find out if Salome and Carese were in fact twins without alerting either one of them. Dark blue eyes narrowed in thought as she considered her options. Magic. It always came back to magic in their family. Antonio would no doubt know an appropriate spell to determine if the women were twins but he would also no doubt tell her to mind her own business as he usually did though she never listened to him in the past and saw no reason to start now. Ilario. She could always enlist her younger brother's assistance. He and the twins were born within hours of each other and the three of them had been raised together at the villa in Italy. If anything was out of whack he would have noticed it. Her younger brother was perhaps the shrewdest of them all and rarely missed anything.

She knew Ilario was out at the moment, the house was relatively empty of her siblings given the time of night it was. Most were out carousing or hunting this time of night. It was far too early for any of them to have returned with their snack for the evening. Deciding nothing was going to get done just sitting there she quickly folded Carese's letter, determining to write her back later that evening, and drawing out a blank piece of parchment she quickly penned a note to her younger brother.

Hey Rio,
When you get a free minute from wenching let me know. I have a little mystery I think you might be able to help me with. You know how to find me.

Sari.

Folding the letter she scrawled Ilario's name across the front and propelling herself to her feet she crossed the expanse of her bedroom and exited, her feet silent on the plush carpet that lined the corridor that led to her the younger Desiderio male's room. Knocking first, of course, as she had no desire to just walk in and chance being greeted with her little brother's bare ass up in the air. Hearing no response she opened the door and quickly dropped the note on the silver receiving tray next to the door where all his correspondence was deposited and closed the door behind her.

With that element of her investigation seen too she turned back towards the wing that housed her's and Antonio's suites and checking just as she had at Ilario's door to see if he was in she determined that his room was empty and slipping inside locked the door behind her. Magic would be the key to unlocking this chest of mysteries but she strongly suspected Antonio would tell her to stop meddling and refuse to help her. So rather than risk his denial she intended to sneak into his work room and rifle through his magic tombs without his knowledge. Antonio was the only one who could open the door to his work room, the room itself existing in a dimensional pocket that could be accessed from any realm Antonio inhabited. It was a place that was not a place in a time that had no time and no one could get to it but Antonio. And her. He'd taught her how years ago though she rarely entered without his knowledge.

Any wall would do for opening the door, it was all magic anyway and things like time and space was relative in the grand scheme of things. In a matter of moments she had summoned the door and entered into his work room, the door closing behind her but remaining visible. Antonio was the only one who could make it disappear completely once he was inside, as far as she knew. Probably a means of him being provided with an early warning system should the room be breached while he was absent so he didn't walk into an ambush.

Knowing his schedule was erratic at best and he could return at any time she grabbed the first dusty tomb and perched on the large onyx slab alter at the far end of the room, the book perched on her thighs as she began to sift through the often hard to decipher text. She had no idea what kind of spell she was looking for but she was certain she would know it when she saw it.

It was so easy to lose track of time in Antonio's private work room. Considering there was no real passage of time when in the dimensional bubble that was Antonio's magic chamber there was no real way to determine just how long she'd been in there without a watch or a clock and naturally neither item was anywhere to be found in the enchanted space. How much time had passed since she had entered the room? A quick glance around her at the multitude of books that had begun to pile up around her reaffirmed she'd been there for quite some time. Her search had not been in vain, fortunately, and she'd come across several spells that might be adapted to suit her needs and bookmarking the specific pages she stacked them on the work table. Most of them required the blood, flesh, or hair of the people in question so they were useless to her until she gathered the necessary components. No doubt Antonio would be able to tell she'd been there but she wasn't really trying to hide it. He might get annoyed with her but he could never really deny her anything.

No more than half an hour later she was returned to her chambers, seated at her desk, as she contemplated her next move. Salome was readily available but she still wasn't entirely sure of the wisdom in involving easily upset little sister just yet. The obvious choice would be to just go to her Father, tell him her suspicions, and ask for answers. The problem with such a scenario was that her father was an expert at evasive answers and would no doubt have a few of his own concerning where she'd been and what exactly had occurred between her and Desiree as by now it was common knowledge in the demon community that someone had murdered the demonic sorceress. For reasons unknown to her Lothanos had not pointed her out as the culprit thus far but it was no doubt only a matter of time before it became known. What would Father dearest think of that, she wondered.

Lost in thought she almost missed the appearance of yet another letter over her desk, fluttering to a stop atop the blotter. Knowing it could not be Carese as she'd had no time to write back to the other woman her curiosity was riding high as she reached for the letter. Scanning the envelope it took a moment but she eventually recognized the script belonging to none other than Morlis himself. Curiouser and curiouser. Sliding a fingernail beneath the wax seal embossed with the family crest she popped it free and slid the letter free. What could her Father possibly want with her? In matters of the family he typically went to Antonio first. Did he even know Nio had named her Padrona? Only one way to find out and quickly her eyes began to pass over the elegant old world script of her father.

”Dearest Sarine,

Congratulations on your newly acquired position as our family's Padrona. I can think of no better person to see to the well being of our family. It is with thoughts of the needs of the family in mind that I write to you today.

I am in Aleris but for today only. I am here on business and can not stay any longer. I have recently been granted the right to claim six Imps from Hell's depths as my own. I have no need of servants and I certainly have no desire for another concubine, let alone six of them. As you have a new manor to staff and the bulk of the family to see too I would like to offer you the chance to claim these six imps on my behalf and take them back to the family in Chaliceton to serve as you see fit. I am sure you can find plenty of use for them.

As it is your household I wish for you to choose them yourself, should you be interested. If so please join me this afternoon at the home of Stativare de Ingis. His estate is located in the Northern region at the base of the Oblivion Mountains. I understand it is short notice and some distance to travel from where you are, but time is of the essence in this matter.

I do hope you will take me up on my offer and I will see you there.

Your loving Father,
Morlis”

Ask and ye shall receive, or so it seemed. The whole thing was very curious. How on earth had her father gained the right to six Imps? It still amazed her he'd finagled Tessa and Andras away from them, but six? What had her father done to gain this right? And bartering with Stativare de Ingis no less? She had never met the man personally but the circles she had been running in for the last several months were those of the demonic realms, thanks to her involvement with her mother, and she knew exactly who he was. Desiree had often spoken of having tried to seduce the grandson of the Morning Star only to be rebuffed on every occasion, a fact that had provided endless amusement for her.

There was no way she could possibly resist going and realizing she had very little time to get on the train that would take her to the Northern realms she began to ready herself, pausing in front of her vanity long enough to assess her appearance and touch up if need be before grabbing the black satin overcoat and cinching it about her waist, a black felt homburg hat placed on top of her loosely coiled hair and pulled low over her eyes, casting her features into shadow. She'd been identified while out with her family by none other than Lumine Ravenholm as the one who had written the borderline disparaging article concerning the new alliance with his realm. Though the encounter had turned out alright it had made her acutely aware of just how easily she could be spotted and confronted while out and about and had since begun to take precautions concerning her identity.

As prepared as she was going to be she departed the villa without notifying anyone of her intentions and traveled quickly to Grand City where she caught the North bound train that would take her to the closest outpost to the Oblivion Mountains which ironically enough, was the train stop at the Eternal Embassy. Planning to arrange for transportation with the Embassy when she arrived she was surprised to find a driver already waiting for her with a hulking black carriage, a team of four horses stomping impatiently as they waited for their passenger. Father had certainly thought of everything and not twenty minutes later the carriage was pulling up in front of an extremely remote estate, the horses having been capable of traveling at speeds that hinted to the fact they belonged to Stativare and not her Father.

Stepping from the conveyance with the assistance of the driver she was ushered to the front door which opened at her approach. Stepping inside it swung closed, the foyer cast in shadows and it appeared she was alone until a familiar figure stepped from the back hallway. Smiling she moved forward, steeling herself for a potential confrontation but was only greeted with a warm hug.

”It is good to see you Sari, I've missed you.”

She could hear the questions in his tone, knew he wished her to tell him herself where she had gone and she had done though she suspected he already had a good idea. He was as determined to find out the secrets of his family as she was. An inherited trait perhaps? Returning his embrace she finally drew from his arms to flash him a slight smile, a smile that said plainly she knew he wanted to know and she wasn't going to tell him. At least not yet. She had other things she wanted to talk about first.

”Buon giorno, Father. It is good to see you as well though I am somewhat surprised to see you here of all places...and I don't just mean Aleris.”

Her meaning was quite obvious as she fixed her blue gaze on him, the hue of her blue orbs darkening as the sky outside crept towards nightfall. How had he gotten involved with Stativare de Ingis of all people and what had he done to garner such a boon from the Prince of Hell? His answer was a smile very like the one she had given him, having no more intention of answering her questions than she had of answering his. At least not yet. Very like her Father in many regards he had often enjoyed matching wits with her and though it frustrated her to no end, to play his little games and indulge in his seemingly petty intrigues, she had become quite good at it and even enjoyed it to an extent. It was how they interacted with one another, their connection, odd though it may be.

Taking her arm he guided her from the foyer through an arched doorway that led to a large study. Her eyes studied the room, taking in the rich fabrics and gilded décor of the well appointed room. It stood to reason. She was officially in the home of demonic royalty.

”Stativare will be with us shortly. The imps are arriving below. There will be several to choose from and you will be able to give them all a once over before you decide.

Turning to face her father as he explained the whereabouts of their host she drew the hat from her head and dropped it over the corner of the chair, her coat following suit as she draped it over the back. The experience was becoming more and more unreal and she still had questions of her own.

”How is Carese Father? Does she miss her twin at all?”

The weight of her stare would be enough to reveal that there was more to her question than simply inquiring after her sisters well being. Her eyes implied she knew everything, though just what she supposedly knew she couldn't have said had he called her unspoken bluff. He went still beneath her gaze, his eyes locking with hers simply because she gave him no choice. Though he gave no outward reaction she could feel the marks on her body representing Doubt, Fear, and Sorrow tingling, hinting to the emotions they sensed deep within her Father. She knew she would get no answers from him today but the simple fact that he reacted so strongly to her questioning, to the accusation in her gaze, revealed that she had been right, where there was smoke there was fire and something was up concerning her sister Carese.

At that moment a door at the back of the room swung open and a tall dark and dead sexy man sauntered his way into the room, commanding their attention effortlessly. There was no mistaking that this was Stativare de Ingis and as she drank him in she finally understood why Desiree had thrown herself at him over and over in spite of his constant, and often humiliating, rejection. He drew near and it was the sound of her Father's voice greeting the man that finally drew her eyes back to his face. Hearing Morlis introduce her she inclined her head, minding her manners in the presence of the Prince, the very sexy Prince.

”It's good to see you again Stativare, always a pleasure doing business with you. Was your latest acquisition to your liking?”

The daemogel known as Stativare de Ingis met Morlis' gaze, a dry smirk touching upon his lips at the veiled question. ”Najia is settling into her new life quite well. Well worth the price of the male imp. The attendants will begin bring in the imps for your inspection. Choose the six you wish. The attendants will see to the others. I have no need to supervise so I will leave you to it.”

By the time he'd finished speaking her jaw had nearly dropped, sheer force of will alone allowing her to maintain her decorum. He had Najia? And her father had apparently traded her for Andras, Salome's concubine? The minute Stativare turned his back to depart she spared a minute to appreciate the rear view of him before turning on her father, his gaze one of amusement as he nodded slightly, wordlessly confirming her suspicions.

”No one upsets my children,”he commented quietly as the Prince's attendants began leading in the lower level demons for her inspection. She knew what and who he meant without needing to ask and she knew then her father was more observant than she'd given him credit for. With a smile she turned to face the first imp and over the next hour inspected nearly thirty in all. It wasn't a matter of finding the most attractive, imps were designed to be attractive, and she had all of them take their human guise before deciding as their family lived primarily in human skin unless they were in private. Two female imps stood out to her in particular, the first calling herself Eva, dark hair and eyes, voluptuous frame. She had Ilario written all over her and she was quickly marked as a keeper and sent to stand off to the side. The next was called Ivory, porcelain skin, also with dark hair and smoky eyes, her appearance in human form bordering on what one would call goth though luckily she lacked the whiny emo quality that usually went along with such a title. After a low conversation with the female imp she nodded and sent her to the side as well, intending her for Ballade.

The others were chosen fairly quickly. Three male, one female. They would serve among the family as staff of the household in whatever capacity was required. Should one of their family take a particular interest in one of them then she would arrange to have the chosen imp bonded to them. Clothing was provided and soon they were all dressed, her own coat and hat returned to her person as she stood in the foyer to bid farewell to her father, the same carriage that had brought her there waiting for her with the six newest members of her family already on board.

”Soon Father, you and I are going to have a talk. About everything.”

”Yes Sarine, we will, but some things are best left as they are.”

”And some things are not. ArrivederLa Padre, grazie.”

A kiss to the cheek and she was off, returning to her home and her family with six hell-born imps in tow. Over an hour later they had arrived and the four unclaimed imps were sent off with Rain to be settled into the servants quarters. Eva and Ivory were taken into the family quarters and prepared to meet their new masters. Concubines within the family were not treated like second class citizens. They were subservient only to those they were bound too and treated like a regular adopted member of the family by everyone else, but imps were almost always bound to their masters, it was simply the way of demonkin and by the time Sarine was done with them each bore a mark on their skin that proclaimed them Desiderio concubines, Ivory's holding the sigil that marked her as Ballade's, Eva's declaring her Ilario's property. Magic put the marks on their skin and magic would bind them to her family.

Now, neither of them had asked her for concubines and in all likelihood would be highly annoyed with her, but she had never let that bother her in the past and wasn't going to start letting it now. Sarine had a concubine, Antonio had a concubine, and soon she would as well, why shouldn't they? As luck would have it they were still out, chasing tail no doubt, and she was able to ensconce the newest concubines in the rooms of their Masters, leaving them there for Ballade and Ilario to find when they returned home.

Pleased with the productive nature of her day she left the last room and began to head towards her own. Her laughter accompanied her as she imagined just how they were going to react when they found the imps in their chambers. Perhaps she should find an out of the way place to be when they got home...with protection...just in case. Where the devil was Antonio when she needed a human body shield? She also wanted to discuss the spells she had found with him. She was convinced more than ever that there was something fishy surrounding her sister Carese and what's more she knew Carese suspected something as well. She was bound and determined to get to the bottom of it all and Antonio was going to help her. Whether he knew it or not.

The matter concerning her younger sister Carese had been at the back of her mind for days. The problem was what step to take next. As usual she had sought council from her brothers, both younger and older, valuing their opinions as she always had. As usual Ilario had cautioned against pursuing the matter further, ever attempting to play Devil's Advocate or perhaps act as her voice of reason though he was big enough to admit he knew his words would fall on deaf ears. They didn't though, not entirely. She knew the matter she was dealing with was sensitive at best, that she may be reading too much into Carese's letters to her and her sibling may not actually have any questions concerning her parentage nor did she care. Her instinct told her otherwise. She would simply take a page from her father's book, as she often did, and go about her search in a less than forthright manner. Rio may have cautioned her that her actions may not have great results but he had also given her the one tid bit of into that would ensure she couldn't let the matter rest.

He had told her there was no way in hell Salome and Carese were twins. Siblings, yes. Twins, not a chance. He'd grown up with them, had been the closest to the “twins” over the years, and if anyone would have picked up on anything strange it would be her shrewd younger brother. She needed proof though and that was where Antonio had come in. He'd reviewed the spells she had earmarked in his books with her and they had settled on three possible avenues. She would need something personal of Carese's and that was the element that would take some doing. Carese had never been to Aleris so she would have to go to Italy to get what she needed.

Responsibilities to the family and to her profession were pressing on her time but she managed to sneak away, leaving Hale to cover for her, and traveling through the various portals that led her first to Eternelle Lune then into the portal at the Villa Italy she arrived home in “no” time. She could tell the moment she stepped within the Villa's wards that Morlis was not here. It was unlike him to leave the grounds when in residence unless it was absolutely necessary so that left her wondering if he was still in Eternelle Lune or perhaps even in Aleris. Food for thought. Later.

None of the occupants of the villa would dare to question or attempt to detain the young Padrona as she went directly to Carese's room, hoping against hope that her luck would hold out and that Carrie would be off on one of her day trips. Where she went was a mystery to most of the people in Carese's life, but at the moment it was working in her favor so she didn't question it. Slipping into her sisters room she searched out her hair brush and quickly ripped the blonde strands from the bristles. Tucking the hair away she was in the villa maybe twenty minutes before she was slipping back out, not wishing to take the risk of running into her father or worse yet, Carese.

Retracing her steps she was soon back in Aleris, only a few minutes having passed since she left as time moved faster on Earth. Retreating to Antonio's work room she took out the tomb holding the first spell that would reveal what she wanted to know. They had decided on a series of spells, each that would provide an answer to specific questions. First things first, she needed to know if Carese was a full blooded succubus or if she were half imp as Salome was. The “twins” (as she could hardly think of them any longer) had never looked alike, ever, their temperament had always been drastically different, and Carese simply didn't behave as the other imps, even half-imps, did.

A metal bowl sat in front of her, a small pile of what looked like scarlet dust in its center. A single strand of Carese's blonde hair was taken from the pilfered bundle she'd gained from her brush and held it over the bowl. Releasing the strand she watched as it floated gently down until it came to rest upon the dust. The moment the hair made contact it burst into flame, rising in a sudden flare of pure scarlet fire. Red. Carese was a full blooded succubus. Ilario was right.

There was no way in hell Carese and Salome were twins.

Carese was obviously a Desiderio, however, so the question remained as to just who her mother was. Already Sarine had her suspicions, though. Her name, her hair color...it all pointed to her father's ex-wife, Caressa, but only Morlis would be able to tell them for sure. Behind her she could feel as much as hear the entrance to the hidden workroom open and knew it was Antonio entering. His presence was felt at her back and knowing he would be able to recognize the spell she was working didn't bother to explain her actions.

”Rio was right...they aren't twins. The question is...who do I speak too first? Father? Carese? Salome?”

Now that she had the information she needed she was unsure as to how to proceed with it. Salome would no doubt have a fit at the news. Her temperamental younger sister often took things very personally and was easily offended and upset. This would no doubt send her into a grand mal emo funk but Carese....deep down she knew Carrie suspected, if she wasn't already aware of it. The trick would be getting father to admit it, to tell Carese what happened with her real mother and why he would enact such a deception. They'd get no apology for it, though, she knew. Morlis did not always do things as others might and it wasn't unheard of for people to question his methods and actions or even become angry with him, but he always did what he felt he had too to protect his children.

Turning to face Antonio she met his gaze, as always seeking out his counsel. It wasn't fair for the former twins not to know the truth but how she went about revealing it would determine just how traumatic it would be for the emotionally fragile half-imp, Ilario's warnings ringing loudly in her mind.

”Perhaps Father first...give him the chance to come clean before I out him. But it makes me wonder, Nio...what else is he hiding?”

She had more questions for her father, not just concerning Salome and Carese, but questions about herself and her mother as well. Questions she hadn't shared with anyone else. The problem would be finding Morlis long enough to have this discussion with him and then, of course, getting the slippery incubus to actually reveal anything useful.

Easier said than done.

Antonio was no more surprised to find that her suspicions were confirmed than she had been and for several hours they remained within his work room discussing her next course of action. Without a doubt this would cause some manner of upheaval in their family, most notably among the two sisters who up until this moment all thought were twins. In spite of the fact that she suspected each girl knew something was up on some level having it confirmed and pushed in your face was an entirely different scenario.

In the end it was her father's secret and it was up to him to make it right.

”Dear Father,

Hopefully this letter finds you well or at least enjoying yourself. You usually are.

I'm quite sure you recall our conversation the last time we met and you are smart enough to know what I was referring too then, as well as now.

I have the proof. I know Tessa is not Carese's mother. I suspect strongly that Caressa is her natural mother and for whatever reason you have kept it hidden all these years, even pawning Carrie off as Tessa's child. Genius move though, truly. Tessa couldn't care less about her children and wouldn't notice whether she had one or two as long as you got them away from her. Brilliant plan. But not brilliant enough.

Both Carese and Salome sense something wrong between them, they know on some level even if they have no explanation for what they feel. Salome even experiences guilt for not feeling closer to her twin and Carese refuses to move on with her life or join the rest of her family until she discovers whatever secret it is about herself that plagues her so.

Only you can put her mind at rest and you are going too. It should come from your lips but if you refuse to tell Carese I will do it for you.

Your loving daughter,
Sarine”

The ending of the letter she had finally decided to write caused her to giggle just a bit to herself. Her father would be furious with her for forcing his hand in such a manner but just like him, she didn't truly care. Her priority was her family and their well being and if that meant pissing Morlis off then that was what she would do. Gladly. He never cared if his methods angered or hurt people so long as the end result was to benefit his family and he had passed that mind set on to his daughter. Ilario had counseled that Carese and Salome both may be angry with her for bringing this to light, that it may cause more heartache than anything else, but deep down she believed they had a right to know who they were. Carese had a right to know her mother and Salome deserved to be alleviated of any guilt she might feel for not being more in tune with the sister she thought was her twin. There may be a time of hurt feelings and emotional unrest, but in the end she felt this was for the greater good.

And if that pissed them off, so be it.

Damn his eldest meddling daughter! The letter from Sarine had been expected. He'd known she would stick her nose into it until she discovered exactly what he was hiding as far as Carese was concerned, she'd warned him at Stativare's home that she would not be letting the matter drop. He had not expected her to be so dogged about it, though, nor capable of producing results this quickly. She had known it would anger him but hadn't given a damn who she pissed off in the pursuit of what she felt was best for her family. He should be furious, ready to strangle her, but he couldn't fault her for traits he himself possessed, traits she no doubt inherited from him.

And so it was that he found himself in his second eldest daughter's bedroom, sitting in a chair facing her silent figure perched on the edge of her bed, trying to figure out how to tell her exactly what Sarine demanded of him. Meeting her eyes he was again amazed at how much she resembled her mother. Her blue eyes were expectant, as if she knew what was coming and wished he would get on with it, and he wondered if Sarine had been right when she said Carese knew something was being kept from her. In his efforts to protect his children he had overlooked the astuteness of several of them and it was now coming to bite him in the ass. He realized Carese may be angry with him over what she was about to tell him but as always he would stand by the decisions he made.

Deciding to just take the plunge and get it over with he drew in a deep breath and became to speak.

”Tessa is not your mother. Based on what Sarine has said I expect you have already suspected something to that effect.”

Her eyes widened in shock at his blunt declaration but not surprise at the news itself and he knew he was right to suspect she already knew something wasn't right between her and her “mother” and “twin”. She nodded to indicate he should continue, refusing to speak until he had explained it all.

”Your mother was my wife..Caressa. You children have heard of her, I know. She was my wife at the same time as was Jezika, whom you have also heard of, and I am also her maker. I made her a succubus.

When Jezika betrayed us...it was very hard for Caressa. They weren't just my wives...they were married to one another as well. It was a three way ceremony binding us all. Caressa did not take her betrayal well and left our home to travel, citing she needed to get away. She had been very stifled by her family before coming to me so I did my best to always give her her freedom and when she left...I let her go with my love and the promise that I would be waiting for her when she returned.

A few weeks turned into a few months then into more than a year. I had tried to remain understanding but Jezika was not the only person she had been married too and in her absence she had left behind not just her wife, but her wife but her husband as well. I went after her. It was easy enough. I was her creator then, as I am now, and none whom I have taken into my demonic line will ever be able to hide from me...you know this to be true.”

He smiled as he spoke his last words, her head nodding to indicate that yes she did know this and to get on with the story already. She was definitely Caressa's child.

”Right...anyway. I found her and confronted her. I was hurt by her abandonment and that in turn made me angry. She was angry that I had come after her after promising to give her her time, angry that I accused her of no longer loving me, demanding she simply say it. We had a terrible argument but that didn't change the fact that I was there because I loved her. I wanted her...and when I touched her she found she could not deny her desire for me as well. We were intimate...and I made a decision. It is no secret I had my sister Cahira place a charm upon me long ago to limit my ability to breed. I will not get a woman pregnant unless I will it and as a result I discovered I could get a woman pregnant simply because I willed it.

Well..I willed it that night. I knew come the morning she would set off again, intent upon leaving my side, and I refused to let her go without a fight. So..without discussing it with her or even informing her of my intentions, I made her pregnant that night. She had mentioned the desire for children some day earlier in our marriage in happier times and I, like many have before, hoped a child now might spark some of that old desire to start a family with me and I would be able to convince her to return.

She was furious when she discovered what I'd done. I had done this without her consent, taken away her free will and, in her mind, attempted to cage her. She was now pregnant with the child she had always wanted but that I had refused her. I thought we'd have more time...and she was angry that I would suddenly change my mind in an attempt to use our child against her. She was only half right. I had always wanted a child with her. I always accepted the day might come when Caressa and I might have parted ways. We are immortal beings and lust demons on top of that...it's hard to expect forever to last for our kind. But I wanted a child with her....an living example of the love we once shared.

But..I'm becoming overly sentimental. We argued and she refused to return home with me. I in turn refused to allow her to take my child from me and demanded that even if she did not wish to return, my daughter would be raised in my home. Period. I gave her no choice in this matter and as her creator she is hard pressed to out right deny me. My children have always been my priority, it was true then and it is true now, and I couldn't allow one of my children to be away from me. I refused to miss your childhood, refused to be a faceless name in your life.

I agreed to leave Caressa to her own devices during the pregnancy and returned home with the agreement that she was to summon me when she went into labor. I know she considered fleeing with you. She had no desire to give you to me but she knew she could not tell me no. I returned home and in spite of my estrangement from your mother I was thrilled that she would be having you and in perhaps a rash decision made while euphoric over your impending birth, I made two of my other women pregnant as well, Tessa and Willow. That you know, of course.

The dates of conception were close enough that I knew you would all be born about the same time. It was then that I made the decision to bring you home on the night your siblings were born so I could declare that Tessa had given birth to twins, instead of just a single daughter. I chose Tessa over Willow because I knew Tessa would take little interest in her children and the chance of discovery was far lower.

I know it seems horribly complicated to go to such lengths rather than tell you the truth from the beginning but my intentions were good. I did not wish you to ever know how your mother and I parted ways. I didn't wish you to ever feel as though your birth was not wanted. Though she was never able to reconcile her anger with me she wanted you. She fought to keep you...demanded that I leave you with her. But I was just as determined that I would not lose you and I won. I told her she could see you as often as she wished...she simply had to return to me. I'm not proud of my actions, but we are demons above all else and we are prone to acting on our anger.

I brought you home the night Tessa and Willow went into labor and was the only one in the room when Salome was born. I delivered her just as I delivered you and I placed her in the crib at your side, announcing to the world that Tessa had given birth to twins.

No one questioned it or suspected until Sarine starting snooping into things. Though she tells me she suspects both you and Salome have always felt something was off and I am inclined to believe her.

You may be angry with me for lying to you, Carese...I will not fault you for it, but I do not regret my decisions. I may not always make the best decisions according to some, but I have always done what I thought was best for you, for all of you. I always will.”

Carese had sat in silent awe as Morlis poured out the story of her birth and just who her mother was. She had always known something wasn't right. She'd never had a connection with Tessa and her bond with Salome was no greater than that which she shared with any of her siblings. To hear Tessa was not her mother had not come as a surprise. She'd almost expected to hear it, really, but the rest of it was news to her...surprising news. She'd expected anger but in her usual pragmatic manner realized anger would be futile. All the children knew he would take any action, however distasteful, to do what he felt was right for his children. It was a running joke among them, actually, and though she wished he had told her sooner she knew growing upset would do her no good in this matter.

With a resigned sigh she nodded and let her gaze meet her Father's. In spite of his tough words regarding his refusal to apologize for what he did she could see his hope that she would not hold it against him in his eyes. Smiling she slid from the bed and approaching him he rose to his feet so she could embrace him.

”Thank you for telling me Father...”

”I love you Carese. Though I regret the heartache I caused your mother, I will never regret having you with me all these years. You were such a beautiful child and you are now a beautiful woman, and I couldn't bare to miss any of it. Though..perhaps you should join your siblings in Aleris. You spend far too much time alone.”

”Alright Father...I'll join the others if you do. I know you want to give Nio and Sari their time but it isn't right for the family to be separated. You can leave them to lead and still be a part of our home.”

She was adamant in this and he could see she would not let the matter rest lightly. Given just how understanding she had been about what he had just revealed he knew he could not deny her and she knew it too, her smug smile creasing her lips as she realized she had him.

”Alright Carrie...if that is what it takes I will pack up Tessa and Tara and head to Aleris with you.”
