You do. I am usually in there logging in one name or another (either Memoria or Verial`Akilara). My computer is usually good at staying connected to chat, but if you think I missed your chat experience for some reason or another, you can always send me the logs.
And like Sorceress said already, it's counted the same way forum exp is counted - by word count.
