It wasn’t exactly the family reunion people dream about but it was a necessary evil, all the upheaval and emotional pain and drama. It was what must be done to see the situation resolved and their daughter….dear gods their daughter…returned to her rightful place. His attention had been drawn to his daughter rolling about on the floor with her sister and his son welcoming the girl so it escaped him that the fragile tightrope Nimue walked with her sanity was about to snap and send them all plummeting. It was the screaming that drew him back, black eyes focused on the woman he had once called wife but it wasn’t her screaming that truly captured him. It was the shimmer of energy he could see surrounding her body as though the spell was forcing the memories physically back into her psyche. What the hell had been done to them?
The memories of the fey were difficult to tamper with at best and very often they were not susceptible to mind or memory altering magic. The spell usually warped when confronted with the tumultuous thoughts and memories possessed by the fey and backfired, as was obvious in this instance. Even before seeing the girl Nimue had begun to have visions of her, dreams that stubbornly circumvented the foreign magic and revealed what had been forcibly hidden. But who? Who had done this and why?
The screaming stopped and silently he moved to stand behind Nimue, his hands coming to rest gently on her shoulders as she haltingly tried to tell the girl she was loved and had been wanted followed shortly by promises of retribution. Unfortunately he had not had the same experience as Nimue. The sight of the girl had not broken any spell or released any hidden memories. That alone was an indication of the type of magic that had been used. In order for it to be as effective as it was on him, but react so badly to Nimue, meant that it was most likely a hellborn incantation and narrowed their search down by quite a bit. It didn’t matter though, whether or not the spell was broken yet, because he knew she was his. The second she had entered her scent, her energy, all of it had reached out to him…she was his. He could feel it in his bones, the demon within her called out to him, demanding to be recognized by her maker, her Father.
He had every intention of adding his sentiments to Nimue’s, reassuring the girl that she was wanted and this was never meant to happen, but before he could utter a single word the emotionally overwrought girl began to speak, pouring out the pain and hurt that anyone could see festering within her. It was her words that caused him to frown however, the comments alluding to a “devil woman”, someone who had held her captive. Those were the words he focused on at first, his attention going instantly towards the information he would need to seek out who had done this and destroy them. No one seemed capable of speaking as Sabina finished her tirade and threw the door open. A single step was taken forward, his intent to keep her from leaving until he saw that she had stopped just outside the door. Beneath his hands he could feel Nimue’s shoulders trembling and he knew she was sobbing though she didn’t make a sound.
Dark eyes turned to fix on Sadia and Kisa who had remained on the floor transfixed by what unfolded before them. “If the two of you can manage to get up off the floor come see to your Mother.” Leaning down he pressed a kiss to Nimue’s cheek, his soft whisper brushing against her ear. “I will go speak to her. We will get to the bottom of this, I promise you.”
Leaving Nimue to the attention of her daughters he eased around them and slowly followed Sabina from the family room, his footsteps silent on the cobblestone walk way as he eased up behind her. He stood silent for a long moment, giving her the chance to compose herself and become used to his presence. When she had calmed herself somewhat he spoke, his low voice soft and gentle as though trying to soothe a wild animal.
“I have no words that are going to make everything all better my dear, but believe me when I say that we did not even know you existed. Even now I have no memory of your birth or even that Nimue carried you though it seems her memories are returning.”
His voice fell quiet, taking the time to think through his words, to consider exactly what he said so as not to make the situation worse. Slowly he eased around her until he was standing in front of her instead of behind though he did not force her to look at him.
”I don’t remember anything…not yet. But I will. I will find a way to break whatever spell was used because I do so very much want to remember you. I can tell you though, that you are my daughter. I can feel it within you. You are mine. You are Nimue’s. That will never be in question ever again. No one will ever take you back or force you to leave us. This is your home, where you belong.”
So much of him wanted to reach out and enfold the girl in his arms, to hold her close and reassure her that he loved her even if he couldn’t remember her birth. None of that mattered. She was here now and she was his. That was all he needed to afford her the same care and love he gave his other children. Reaching out for her his right hand slowly eased towards her bowed head, fingers brushing gently down her hair in a loving gesture.
”Stay with us Sabina. We will get to the bottom of all of this, I promise you. But I must know my daughter…who did this too you? Who is the woman you spoke of? The devil woman?”
She had given plenty of indications that whoever she lived with until now had not made life pleasant for her and if this was not the woman who had taken her she would damn well lead him to the one who did and she’d die for the part she played in it.
