One of the most lively points of interest in the city, the Oak Barrel Tavern is the place where many come to celebrate or simply drink their cares away. No matter where you come from or what your story may be, there is always a freshly poured pint and an empty seat waiting for you.

I'd been a private investigator for most of my life. This was a career change that I wasn't sure was going to work for me, but it was one that was needed. The PI business hadn't exactly been booming and there weren't that many clients who followed through with payment as of late. So, I'd applied for Tavern Keeper. I figured that someone who needed money as badly as I did knew how to stretch a penny, and what better place to be a cheap skate then in a bar?
As I walked into the Tavern for the first time I couldn't help be be in awe. The place was horrible. It was filthy, and smelled like someone had relieved themselves in the corner, but hadn't cleaned it up. This wasn't something that I'd be able to tackle completely alone. It also wasn't something that would be fixed completely in a day. I know what you're thinking 'But Vic, you're a wizard. Just do some magic.' And while that's true I am a wizard, there's only so much one can do with magic. Damnit all, I'm a wizard, not a cleaning lady.
Well, I guess for now I was a cleaning lady as well. First things first though. I realized that I was going to need some help. Looking over the notes that were given to me concerning the bar, I saw that I was allowed three associates. It didn't specify what they were, so I guessed it was up to me to figure out what I needed the most.
Sniffing in, to my deepest regret, I knew that I would need someone who knew how to clean much better then I did. I'm your typical male when it comes to cleaning. Which means that i basically through things on the floor when I'm done with it. I could make a drink, and I can handle myself in a fight. That meant, I guess, that I was at least one of the bartenders. Which left the fact that I needed two hostesses/servers and one more bartender/bouncer. I found a pen and paper, then reluctantly, sat down. I was pretty sure that I sat on something that was still breathing. I didn't want to stand up and find out either. Quickly, I wrote out a flier:
NOW HIRING!
The Oak Barrel Tavern Needs YOU!
Tavern Keeper seeking two Hostesses/Servers - Must be willing to work nights and weekends.
Needed one Bartender/Bouncer - must also be willing to work nights and weekends, also must be prepared to deal with hostel guests.

I looked at my creation, and nodded. It would work. Hopefully so would some Alerians. With recent events I'd come to realize that while I thought of myself as open minded, I was actually a bit racist. I'd lumped all vampires, and demons into the "evil-bite-your-face-off-as-soon-as-look-at-you" category. However after fighting alongside many of Aleris' most well known demons and vampires, I'd come to understand that not scary beings were bad. With that in mind I posted my flier, and hopefully I would have some interviews very soon.

I love bread. I love the way it's made. I love the way it's cooked. I love everything about it. Right down to the mill that churns and turns the wheat into something usable. There's nothing in the world like sitting down to a nice big bowl of beef stew and having a freshly baked loaf of bread sitting next to you.
What I hate however, are rumors. I hate the way they spread like wild fire. I hate the way it corrupts people's opinions of even the most well respected men. I hate everything about them. Right down to the mill the churns and turns the rumors into something completely false and useless. There's nothing in the world like finding out that there's a rumor going around that bashes your good name. Especially if the rumor is that you're a sexual deviant.
I sat in the Oak Barrel Tavern and crumbled up the paper in disgust. I couldn't believe that they'd print something like that even without any proof. Of course I'd heard stories about women leaving here and later finding out that they'd been taken advantage of, but I'd been working on that. Of course I had no idea where to start working on something like that. Were these women being given something to make them fall asleep? Or could they just not hold their alcohol and taken advantage of then?
How does someone go about finding that out? Of course I had to look internally first. I didn't really know much about the trio I'd hired to help me run the bar. There were Jill and Alicia who served and hosted, and Jacob the second shift barkeep. (Yes I put him on second shift cause I didn't want to have to deal with those people all the time. There's an advantage to being the manager.)
I stood up and walked out of the tavern. It was empty now due to it being "Off hours", and I probably could have done what I needed to do inside, but once you invite something in it's hard to get it out. Unless you have an escape clause. Which I built into our deal. I looked around to make sure there wasn't anyone watching me and made my way around the back of the pub. I sat in between two trash cans. They smelled, but not as bad as they could have. Trash was picked up this morning so there was very little laying around.
I closed my eyes and cleared my head (Which surprisingly took longer then I thought it would. I hadn't done any sort of big magic since that thing with the Redmonts a while back and I had a lot going on in the noggin it seemed). I pushed thoughts of the little girl who would never call me "daddy" away, and concentrated.
Eventually I felt comfortable enough to begin, and started chanting softly, "Whispers, Whispers, Whispers." Then waited. Nothing happened the first time, so I tried again, "Whispers, Whispers, Wh-" before I finished the second round of callings, a bright flash zoomed into my vision. I opened my eyes and before me hovered a small man about three inches tall, and looking rather annoyed.
"What do you want Sage? I was in the middle of watching some very interesting activities down the street." He flew a little closer, and his voice dropped to a conspiratorial tone "You remember that redhead that was in the bar last night? Well, she took that little colt of a man in the corner home, and they had sex all night long. They wore each other out. They were both sound asleep when her husband came home from working the night shift in the guard shack." With that the little man doubled over in laughter. "Neither of them saw it coming!"
"Whispers." I made it a command by putting a bit of will into the Name. "I hired you to watch my associates. Not follow some hot redhead home and watch her boink some little kid!" I felt my anger getting the better of me and calmed down thinking.
"Wizard Sage, I did what you asked me to. I watched the two ape women and the ape man all night. I had a friend follow the redhead so that I could meet up with them after you closed."
Only slightly nullified, I nodded. "Fine. What did you see?"
Whispers took a deep breath in. And continued taking it. In, in in, father in. Oh god, if I didn't stop him soon he was going to explode. But before I could get over to him, his mouth opened. "Well, the man ape served 3 mixed drinks to a vampire, 5 beers to a really smelly werewolf, 8 tankards of mead to a fairy, who by the way was well wasted after the second. Then he made 3 steaks, 4 servings of those yellow roots you fry up, two burgers, 9 salads. Whats the point of ordering a salad out anyways, if you want to munch on leafy greens there are plenty of them outside. It doesn't make any sense."
And he continues telling me everything that Jacob had served the night before. Almost before I knew it he'd started on Jill, doing the exact same thing, still in one breath. My head was beginning to throb from all the words being crammed into it. I put up my hand.
"I surrender! Whispers, what I want to know is, did you see any of them pour something into any of the glasses that shouldn't have been poured in?"
Whispers sighed, hating being cut off as I just did to him. I'm sure he thought it was a very detailed report full of useful information. It wasn't however, "Wait, How am I supposed to know what's called for in a drink and what isn't? If I drink one sip I'll be dead!" with that he flew off, presumably to resume his spying on the redhead.
"Well Vic, that was a great waste of time." I said to myself. I stood and dusted...something...off my pants. "I guess I'm going to have to find help somewhere else."
