It is no secret that the streets of Aleris have been nearly empty for the last month or so. The influx of newcomers that swarmed through Aleris with the opening of the Outer Gates has dwindled until the city itself resembles more of a ghost town then the thriving hub of activity it once was. The streets are empty, the shops are suffering, and even the Festivals scheduled to be held at the Temples have been canceled due to lack of interest on the part of the Alerian population. Even my articles were suspended due to lack of any real news to tell.
Naturally the majority of the blame has been laid at the feet of the new comers, those who immigrated to Aleris through the Outer Gates and chose to make their home here, at least in part, but it is not just the newcomers who have abandoned the city. The long time citizens have been notably absent as well.
Others have speculated that the well publicized Redmont war has contributed to the empty streets as citizens have prepared themselves for the possibility that the war will spill over from the Outlands into Aleris but thus far those accusations have been unfounded.
There has been little effect on the Alerian economy due to the Redmont war save for the occasional skirmish in the street by the combating family. It is important to note that none of these skirmishes have resulted in the injury or casualty of any bystander.
Hope is on the horizon, however, and soon the city may once again return to its former glory. Slowly but surely activity has begun to pick up around the city. Slowly but surely the pubs, taverns, and shops have begun to see a rise in business as has the volume of people seeking out the Temples of Larissa and Calypso which one can only hope will mean that the next Festival Day will yield a much better result then the ones in the past.
It isn’t much but it is at least a start. Is Aleris a lost cause? Should the Outer Gate immigrants pull up stakes and head back home and give up on the possibility of finding a life here in Aleris? It seems the citizens, new and old, have spoken and they have decided that there is still some life in the city yet. Here is hoping they are right.
Until next time….I’ll be watching.
