Once Madrin saw the wine and the fact that Lady Victoire appeared to need a private word with Verial Akilara he decided it was time to go. He asked the healer Wish Star for a private word in the infirmary when she was able he would make himself available. Also, Madrin made sure to give all of the attendees a proper goodbye. As he left he caught a glimpse of a red cloak moving away rapidly. "Guardsman who was that leaving in such a rush" His ice blue eyes locked with the guard who had a very arrogant posture as he watched the person leaving.

"That damned Maxim Redmont fleeing with his tail between his legs." the guard added an arrogant sneer after his words.

The Bariston soldier had no time to react as Madrin hit him so hard that he felt his jaw shatter as the man slammed into the wall opposite of the council chambers clearly unconscious. " You fools need to think before you open your mouths!" The other soldier looked into his eyes and nodded agreement as he shook a little. "You should probably inform someone that one of the guards has been disabled for being an arrogant prick, though someone likely heard me shout." Madrin gave him no chance to answer as he rushed after Maxim.

Madrin had to admit Maxim Redmont was a quick bastard but, he managed to catch him one floor down as he was descending the next set of stairs. "Excuse me Lord Redmont may we speak a moment." Madrin used the most respectful tone he could as the Redmont turned to him. " I am Madrin Kir please excuse the babbling of fools, he has been replaced and I am sure the Lady Victoire will see you now." He gave a bow of equal respect. "Allow me to accompany you to make sure, your brother is already inside and I need to return as well." He awaited a response as he watched Maxim for hostile action.

His only thoughts apart from possible counters was that it seems he may have already decided to be Captain of the Alerian Guard. He was behaving as such without the added benefits. No matter he had something to do before accepting any unwanted but, needed jobs. Also, he just realized he hadn't asked for aid to Chaliceton due to his shock at being offered such a position, so he needed to go back anyway.

Sahar had brought the body of Deanna DiCorvino to a small room located next to those used as makeshift infirmaries and lay her gentle upon a pallet on the floor. Two women accompanied her, women who were used to dealing with the dead, women who were skilled in the art of burial preparations. She had specifically instructed these women on how she wanted the body handled, the importance of ritualistic cleansing and anointing. A thin white robe was laid out to dress Deanna in, and Sahar had informed the women to leave her hair unbound, which surprised the women, yet they did not question, merely complied. “This woman is to be treated with the utmost care and consideration. Her mate, who soon will meet with our Lady, grieves fiercely for her, and do not be alarmed if he happens to chance upon you as you prepare her body.” Sahar explained quietly. “He will come for her as soon as Lady Victoire is finished with him, this I can assure you.” The women nodded and bowed to Sahar before the desert woman retreated.

Sahar had returned only to introduce Lady Victoire and to remain until Layla had indicated she wished to meet with the drow Verial Akilara in private. All present took their leave, and Sahar, accompanied by Captain Pennington, decided to make their rounds throughout the castle. The two were talking quietly amongst themselves when they heard the commotion in the main entrance chamber hall. Quickly they picked up their paces until they came upon the two men who guarded the entrance, well, rather one who was alert.

“Explain yourself, soldier,” Ambrose Pennington barked as Sahar hurriedly knelt beside the unconscious soldier. Her lips moved in a rapid pace, but her words were unintelligible, a long dead language used by those who healed among her desert tribe. Sahar closed her eyes and continued to chant as she lay her slim hands against the soldier's head, the heat that radiated from her skin as it came in contact with his could be seen as bright yellow glow, something in comparison to the sun's rays. It took several agonizing moments, but finally the soldier's eyes fluttered open, and he gasped as he peered upward into the smiling face of Sahar. “Welcome back to us, sir. I would advise you to keep your movements slow, for though you are healed, your are still susceptible to pain.” The fallen soldier nodded and attempted a smile as Sahar lifted him, and gently guided him to standing position only to come face to face with the heated glare of Ambrose Pennington, Senior Captain of the Bariston Guard who had been given the full story from the soldier's comrade in arms.

“Now that you are healed by the lovely and gracious Sahar, explain to me why you decided to take it upon yourself to turn away a personally invited guest of Lady Victoire's without any direct orders indicating you should do so, Soldier!Normally a man of even temperament, his voice hardly ever raising above normal speaking tones, Ambrose was livid as his voice raised several octaves, and Sahar could see veins bulging along his neck. “Did I personally give you such orders?” Ambrose did not give him an opportunity to answer. “No! No I did not! Did your great Lady did you such orders? NO! No she did not!” The Captain's nostrils flared as he struggled to personally not throttle the man for such incompetence. “You dare presume to overrule our Lady's authority, sir? Is that what you thought when you degraded, insulted, threatened, and then finally turned Maxim Redmont from our door?”

“My Captain!” The soldier gasped, visibly shaken and rather fearful of his superior officer's wrath. “I...forgive me! I did not think....”

“No,” Ambrose said coldly. “You did not.” The Captain of the Guard took several deep breaths to calm himself before finally able to speak again without rage blinding his next actions or words. “Remove your armor soldier. You are hereby stripped of your services and duties to our Lady until further notice. The next time I see you, you had best be assisting the clean up crew. Until I say so, your only duties now are to aid in the removal of debris and bodies within the City limits. Perhaps a lesson in humility will teach you to respect others, and those who are in positions of authority.” Ambrose turned away then from the stricken former soldier. “When I turn around, you had better be gone, and out of uniform.”

Defeated, the once soldier turned and headed to the armory, his shoulders slumped. Sahar felt a twinge of compassion for the broken man, but knew that his status reduction was not only temporary, but necessary. Layla would have authorized Ambrose to act accordingly anyway, and the Captain simply did what he felt his Lady would have ordered him to do had she not been occupied with Verial Akilara. Ambrose turned to the remaining guard, awestruck from the entire scene that played out before you. “I will send someone to relieve him immediately. Madrin Kir...” Ambrose had to smile faintly. “He has spirit, I'll grant you that.” The words were spoken mostly to Sahar who nodded. “Indeed, Captain. Even a common warrior had the sense our fine soldiers do not, though...” Sahar had to smile. 'His use of brute force was a bit excessive do you not think, Captain? The foolish man's jaw was shattered beyond the repair of any healer other than myself.”

Ambrose shrugged his shoulders lightly. “Honestly, Lady Sahar, I probably would have done the same thing. Maybe threw in a swift kick in his arse,” Ambrose blushed then upon seeing Sahar's raised brows followed by her grin. “Err, forgive my language my lady, I sometimes forget myself.” The magae chuckled. “No forgiveness required, Captain. I myself tend to utter phrases unsuitable for a lady's ears.” This brought laughter from Ambrose as well as the remaining soldier who immediately quelled his humor with one glance from Ambrose. “What are you laughing at? Get back to work.” The Captain shook his head as he headed toward the stairwell, figuring he might have a shot in seven hells of catching up to one irate vampire and the future (hopefully) Captain of the Bariston Army.

Sahar gathered her skirts up in hand, her quick but graceful strides allowed her to move in stride with the Captain who paused briefly in his movement. “My Lady Sahar, you need not accompany me. I fear what might happen should we come face to face with the Redmont Lord.” Sahar's lips curved as she glided breezily past Ambrose down the stairs. “You are thoughtful to consider my safety, Captain,” she called back over her shoulder to Ambrose who regarded the desert woman with unhidden surprise for her bravado before descending the stairs two at a time. “But you'll find that I am no stranger to soothing raw wounds. I hope to convince Lord Redmont to return with us, but should that not happen, I will know that I at least gave it my best attempt. If I did not at least try, I would not forgive myself for the repercussions of my actions, or lack thereof.”

Finally the two caught sight of Madrin Kir and Maxim Redmont. Ambrose halted as he observed the warrior and the vampire in conversation, which appeared rather one-sided. “Sahar, sweet Lady, I really wish you would stay here. I cannot guarantee this will not get ugly.” Sahar's honeyed eyes were alight with amusement. “Do you plan on attacking the Redmont, Captain?” “Of course not,” was his reply. “Do you believe he will attack me then, for no particular reason at all?” Ambrose sighed. “No. I believe the man had honorable, if rather belated, intentions, but Lady, after the encounter with that insufferable sibling of his...” Sahar waved a hand in dismissal. “Insufferable, yes. Crass, lacking in common sense and rather egotistical, yes. There is no doubt of that, but Captain, the fact remains that he did come, for whatever reasons or intentions they might be.” Sahar took the again Captain by the arm and allowed him to lead her down the last few steps so that they might be visible to the two males.

“Besides, Captain, if we mirror the same reception to Maxim Redmont as you received from his sister, then we are no better than she is.” Sahar offered a warm smile. “That is not our way, Captain. That is what distinguishes those who were born to be leader of men, and those who were simply meant to serve as lackeys. Without this simple knowledge, to treat others accordingly whether they be friend or foe, to remain dignified at all times, is what defines us, what elevates us to rise above the status of savage. Maxim Redmont made an attempt to be here, and we will honor our Lady by greeting him in a manner that does not disgrace or shame the woman we represent.”

Ambrose nodded, accepting and agreeing with the truth of her words, and together Layla Victoire's Captain of the Guard, and personal healer found themselves less in the company of Madrin Kir and Maxim Redmont. Ambrose remained silent as the magae began her greetings. Sahar dipped her head in greeting as she smiled at Madrin Kir before turning her attentions to Maxim.

“Lord Redmont, well met sir. Forgive the earlier display of rudeness, for that was uncalled for. I am Sahar and bid you welcome to the castle. I understand you are a busy man, and I assume your business with Jade City detained you. It is of no matter, for you are here now, and for that I thank you. If it is still your intent, you would honor me by allowing me to accompany you to Lady Victoire's chambers.”
Sahar drew herself up to full height, just shy of six feet as she stood by the equally composed Ambrose Pennington and waited for the vampire's response.

Post subject: Re: Ashes to Ashes - Aleris on Fire Post

When Layla finally entered the room, Verial could not deny he was a little bit surprised. She wore a crimson hued dress trimmed with gray, a color that Verial noticed matched her eyes. Her blonde curls were pinned up and Verial thought she looked more like she was ready to go to a party rather than a meeting. Honestly, he half expected the ruler of Bariston - as her reputation proceeded her to be somewhat of a brute - to be taller and stronger in appearance. But Layla was neither of those; she was approximately 5'4 and was a petite and pretty looking thing. Nevertheless, Verial was always one to not judge books by their covers; he had known quite a few women like Layla who you were usually sorry to have messed with afterwards.

When Layla mentioned to Quinn and Verial that there would be no more further bloodshed while in her chambers, Verial turned his attention from the ruler of Bariston and looked disappointedly at Quinn. Verial had no doubt in his mind that Quinn was getting ready to launch himself across the table in Verial's general direction. Still, the two were able to put aside their differences for now and act as adult-like as they could in front of Lady Victoire.

Verial watched as the others in the room were recognized and then left one by one until him, Layla and Sahar were the only three remaining. Once the gathering had shuffled out of the council chambers, Layla moved from where she was previously standing at the head of the table and pulled out a chair that was opposite where Verial was. She sat down upon it with a laugh and looked at him amusedly, to which Verial returned her rather jovial visage with a questioning look of his own. When, Layla mentioned Verial was the strangest being she had ever met, Verial did not know how he should have taken the remark.

"Uh, thank you, I think," Verial said. He was aware he was different from most people; part drow, fallen angel and dragon with those eccentric eyes of his - one blue and one green colored - but no one had ever come right out and said it quite like that. "You believe I attacked the Val`nothe to protect others? No, I just thought it would be fun."

Sahar, leaving for a moment and then re-entering the room, came back with red wine and poured them both a glass. After the desert woman from Heruin was done and Layla approved of the drink choice, she left the two alone. Verial had no doubt in his mind that this discussion was about to get serious, so his eyes flickered about the room for a brief second for an escape route. There were only the doors to the room and Verial had his suspicions that if he bolted, there was a pair of guards waiting outside for him.

Verial turned his attentions back to Layla, deciding to wait this out and see what she wanted from him. At first, she asked him about the Redmonts and their current situation. Verial nodded and opened his mouth to speak, but Layla held up a slender finger before letting him reply. So, Verial let her talk - after all, he was pretty good at being quiet anyway - and talk was what she did.

He was not even halfway through his first glass of wine when Layla finished her own drink and poured herself another. Either the Lady of Bariston was really thirsty, or she was nervous. Layla had every right to be anxious because when she started talking of Verial's past - the thing he had tried very hard to hide - his lips tightened together as if he was making every attempt to not have her stop talking. His brows narrowed at her. This woman sure knew a lot about him - from his past in Oneiro to the battles he had fought alongside Deanna at Tezzra's Gorge.

As Verial was wondering where this whole discussion about his past was going, Layla stood up, pushing out of her chair and leaned forward to place her hands on the table. Her expression turned serious, the exact opposite of how she looked before. Suddenly Layla was all about business again and as she straightened herself, trying to look taller (if that was possible) and prouder, she asked if Verial would rule Grand City as its King.

Not being able to help himself, Verial partially opened his mouth in surprise. There were a few strained seconds of silence before Verial said anything, and then instead of words, Verial's lips curved upwards into a smile and he laughed. He laughed like he hadn't laughed in the longest time. Clearly Layla didn't find this amusing as she gazed down at him cross-like and angered. In fact, he was in such throws of laughter that Verial had to hug his sides and lean down towards the table, his forehead on it. Verial was sure that had anyone been in the hallway, they would have heard him laughing like some sort of madman.

"Are you... serious? I'm truly amazed," he breathed through fits of giggles. "You have proven yourself to be quite the comedian, Lady Victoire."

When Verial looked up and wiped tears from the corners of his odd colored eyes, he could tell she was indeed being serious with him and that his mocking laughter had probably only offended her. Verial straightened himself in his chair, raven feathered wings resting against the back of it, trying to change his amused expression towards being attentive to her questions and requests.

"Listen, you know all about my past, obviously, and you think it is a good idea to ask me? How terrible were the other candidates? Just because I tried to protect the city from the Val`nothe and because I used to be a King, this doesn't gives me the right qualifications," Verial said pausing to shake his head, though he was not exactly saying no to her either. "I feel that if I were to accept your offer and help you out, this situation would only end up in disappointment. I mean, my own city, as I'm sure you know, was destroyed under my own watch and I helped. Sure, I didn't know what I was doing at the time, but that doesn't make it any better, does it?"

Just help a pretty girl out, will you? his dragon said stopping him from speaking.

That's your reasoning? Really?

It's no better than your reason for not wanting to help, Verial. Because you believe you might burn Grand City down? The Val`nothe attacked it, three times bigger than us, and the city is thriving and trying to rebuild. Besides, you have nothing better to do and this is a chance to –

To redeem myself even further?

I was going to say to sleep in a nice, cushy bed, but that works also.

Verial breathed in slowly at long last, breaking the silence between him and Layla. She was still watching him, awaiting his answer. Verial had to hand it to the woman - she somehow knew how to get what she wanted.

"Okay, I'll help, but I don't want to be called 'King'. As you suggested, Protector Regent would be preferable. It has a better ring anyway," Verial said. In truth, Verial thought the title didn't matter because people would bow out of his way and call him "King". It was just the way of certain people who were brought up to respect and serve royalty. Verial always disliked that when he was King of Oneiro and constantly struggled trying to get people to call him just Verial. "And, my son will likely be staying in close proximately in the castle as well. I assume that's not a problem though. This city... it will need some of Bariston's guards to stay posted here as well. After a large battle and the fall of the King, there's usually vultures around trying to make any easy kill on a weakened city."

Verial turned his head towards the ceiling of the council chambers again and closed his eyes momentarily. Never again in his mind did he ever think he would be in the position, let alone, asked to be in the position of ruling authority again. In truth, the whole situation ahead of him was terrifying, but Verial was certain he could also be brave and help get this city back on its feet until a more suitable replacement was found. Verial drew his eyes away from the ceiling and turned his attention back to Layla.

"You also wanted to know about the Redmonts, still?" Verial said to which Layla nodded. "You shouldn't need to be concerned. If Isabella Redmont is calling Maxim 'King', I'm fairly certain she's just having illusions of grandeur or she hasn't been around Maxim in a very long time. I fought alongside Maxim in quite a few battles and wars. Back then, Maxim might have referred to himself as the 'King of Redmonts', but now I am not so sure. I saw him... maybe a few months back and he was travelling very much alone when he was aware there were other Redmonts out there that he could leading. I could be wrong, but at that point, it seemed he was past being called a 'King'. In fact, I know that Maxim and Alerion were on good speaking terms. As a friend of Maxim's, I would like to believe he's not looking to start a fight with this city."

Verial's head turned in the direction towards the door. He was quiet as if studying the only entrance and exit to the council chambers. In truth, he was listening to things his sensitive hearing caught that others could not. Afterwards, he turned towards Layla and motioned towards the door.

"If I'm not mistaken, Maxim was in the building just now talking to one of your guards, but he's turned to leave by order of that guard," Verial said. "Guess he did intend to stop by after all."

Post subject: Re: Ashes to Ashes - Aleris on Fire Post

The gleaming onyx sheen of the twin-bladed glaive was accentuated even more prominently with the light of the full moon shining down upon it, and the sudden thuds of booted feet against the ground brought him to a halt. The weapon was lifted and balanced across his shoulders as he turned to face Madrin Kir, in a fashion that indicated no threat... but that nevertheless left him guarded. Fiery eyes glanced back towards the doors of the palace -- already he could see two more figures headed towards him, yet he opted to remain in spite of the fact that it was against his better judgment.

The tone used by Madrin was the complete opposite of the sentry that had just been apparently stripped of his position and title, and the former slayer responded in kind. "Unfortunately, I am a bit late nonetheless, Kir. I needed to return to Jade City and report on what happened here, but it took longer than expected. As I pointed out to that guard, I've no issues with waiting for Lady Victoire to finish whatever affairs she may be tending to," he replied, a slight incline of his head offered in acknowledgment as they were joined by an older man in military-grade armor, and a woman with beautifully exotic features. The armor gave the man away as a native to the city of Bariston, but the woman's appearance all but implied she was from the deserts of Heruin -- a place that the Redmont hadn't yet visited.

"There's nothing to forgive -- I can tell quite a bit's happened in my absence, and I also have news for Lady Victoire regarding my former status with Jade City and their standing forces." Reluctantly, the weapon was replaced in the straps along the back of his armor, as the Kinslayer's scarlet-hued gaze swept observantly across the three of them. "So, I'm to be escorted by all of you? If you're worried I'm going to vandalize the palace, I can assure you that I've seen more than enough destruction in the past week to last for the next several months. By all means, lead the way and I'll explain what I know," he murmured, lifting one muscular arm to gesture back towards Grand City's mesmerizing palace.

Several hours earlier...

"It's over. It was a woman, named Terra Vale, who supposedly instigated all of this and released those abominations -- both of which have been imprisoned once more. The army she raised so quickly was decimated, though both sides suffered catastrophic losses. I'm not so sure that I'd call this a victory," the Redmont explained, as he took a seat in the chair directly across from Jade City's mayor. The old man nodded, fingers clasped in front of him as he studied the battered armor Maxim was wearing, especially the way he had modified the Jadean insignia. "Then it's over. Good. These people can return home, and we can call back our own soldiers since the danger has passed."

Brilliant scarlet-shaded eyes narrowed defiantly, and he tilted his head ever so slightly. "That wasn't what we agreed upon. The siege is over, yes, but the war hasn't ended until we've rebuilt what was destroyed -- are you even aware of how dire the situation was? More and more, I'm beginning to think that you don't realize that there is a world outside of these walls, and you have an obligation to Aleris, mayor," he stated flatly, the disappointment in his voice mirrored by the expression on his face. The other man sneered, and shook his head in return.

"I'm not wasting my resources and people on the problems of others, Redmont. You wanted us to help end this war, and it is now over. Our duty is fulfilled."

"I was under the impression that cowards could only be exposed under the threat of danger, direct or otherwise. It seems that you've proven me wrong."

"How dare you! You answer to me, Commander R-"

One fist was brought down with enough force that the polished granite surface of the table was split by several fractures, and the former slayer rose to his feet as he unstrapped the piece of armor that displayed the sigil of the city. It was tossed on the shattered stone, and Maxim turned away from the selfish fool to begin moving towards the doors. "Consider that my resignation, Mayor McJacqass," Maxim muttered, with a disapproving shake of his head. "That's not my name, Redmont!"

He paused, and glanced back over his shoulder to offer a mocking smile in response. "I know."

Presently, in Grand City -- or what was left of Grand City, anyway...

"Perhaps I'm naive, but Jade City was barely harmed throughout this entire situation. They have the resources and personnel to spare, yet they're too selfish to even honor their own agreement now that the threat has passed... I couldn't stay, I'm afraid," Maxim explained to Madrin, Ambrose and Sahar as they moved through the crumbling halls of the palace. Though it had been nearly destroyed by the rampaging Val`nothe, it was still magnificent even in its ruined state. He was silent for a moment longer, and then decided it was time to address the other pressing issue...

"You should be aware that only I speak for myself -- not even my sister speaks for me. The accusations of that guard, while they may be based on something she said or did... they were false. If I wanted the Aleris throne -- and believe me, I do not -- then I wouldn't have entered the fray when I did," he explained, his voice as calm and subdued as ever. He looked over at the Bariston captain who was accompanying them, and then inclined his head slightly. "I assume you were the one who approached Isabella... at the very least, you should know it wasn't anything personal. With our history... trust is something very difficult to gain, and I think you understand that."

"As for titles, since that sentry made a point of referring to one that I relinquished years ago... I have none, nor do I wish to be addressed that way," he finally added, falling silent thereafter as he let them escort him to wherever Layla Victoire was.

Post subject: Re: Ashes to Ashes - Aleris on Fire Post

Layla considered strangling Verial Akilara for a brief, very brief, moment when he started to laugh at her offer to co-rule with her. Her fingers curled against the wooden backing of her chair, and she practiced the breathing techniques taught to her by Sahar while he had his moment of amusement. As it was, she could feel the throbbing of her temples, the narrowing of her eyes as she waited for him to compose himself. Breathing was helping, though it was obvious from her obvious look of displeasure that finally ceased his ridiculous actions.

And then he agreed, and Layla's heart was elated with joy and relief.

“I am so very pleased and humbled by your acceptance, Verial. Truly I am.” She waited as he continued on, insistent of not being called a King and Layla nodded, waving her hand in dismissal. “Of course, of course. I would reject such a pompous title, myself. My people call me 'Lady', and will continue to do so regardless of my stature. The same would apply for you, Verial, however do not be surprised if from time to time some of your subjects slip and utter a 'Your Majesty' when you pass by.” She smiled at him then, revealing dimples that usually go unnoticed. “Protector Regent is far more suitable, I agree.”

Her elegant blonde brows rose at the mention of his son. “Ah yes, Kyrian is his name, I do believe. I forget that you are a parent, for you seem so very young, but as we both know...” Gray eyes twinkled then mischievously. “...looks can be deceiving.” Layla leaned over the table and filled the rest of his wine glass with the fine vintage. “Of course your son shall stay in the castle in close proximity to you. I shall do the same, at least for the next month or so, until you are acclimated to your position and responsibilities.” She smiled then at Verial. “I promise you, Verial, I will not leave you high and dry to handle the new found responsibilities of ruling alone."

Verial seemed to understand her words, which put Layla at ease as she reclaimed her seat. Before she could even ask, he informed her of his opinion on the Redmonts which she earlier asked him of. Layla sipped her wine and listened as he spoke, nodding briefly at the end of the conversation. “Your opinion means much to me, Verial, and I thank you for your honesty. I will not lie and say I was not concerned by the actions of Isabella Redmont and the potential for Maxim to attempt to claim the throne.” Her cheeks reddened then as she chuckled. “I'll admit I feel foolish for even considering such an idea, and will admit that I was perhaps wrong in my opinion of the Commander. In truth, I honestly hoped he would have made an appearance tonight for I wished to-” Layla's words died upon her lips as she arched a brow at Verial who did not appear to be listening to her one-sided conversation.

She watched curiously as Verial turned his attention toward the doorway, wondering what was so important that his attention had been drawn away. “Is there something amiss?” It was then Verial informed her that Maxim Redmont, Commander of the Jade Army (or so she assumed at the time), had indeed come in response to the summons, which gladdened Layla, but when Verial added that he had been detained and then sent away, Layla's fingers tightened around her wine stem and she had to set the glass down before it shattered in her hand.

“Order of the guard?” She asked sharply as she stood abruptly, her chair nearly knocking over backwards by her sudden movements. “I gave no such orders!” Her voice rose. She was prepared to head downstairs to the entrance chamber herself when there was a sharp and frantic rapping against the door. “Come!” She snapped as the door opened and a frazzled Miles Long entered. Second in command behind Captain Ambrose Pennington, Miles appeared flushed and out of breath as he entered the room hurriedly and bowed his head to Layla.

“My Lady! Forgive my intrusion, but it regards Lord Redmont.” He glanced briefly at Verial and offered a nod before words simply tumbled out of his mouth as he spoke to Layla. “There was an issue, my Lady regarding Lord Maxim's unexpected appearance. One of the sentries detained him before sending him on his way. Madrin Kir managed to stop the Lord, followed by the Captain and Lady Sahar.” Miles wiped at the sweat that beaded his brow, his helm held under the crook of his arm with his free hand.

Layla groaned and held a hand against her forehead. “Tell me Miles, please tell me, that somehow one of them managed to convince Maxim Redmont to return, to meet with me. Tell me all of my work wasn't in vain because of the incompetence and over-zealousness of one inept guard!” Gray eyes flashed with unhidden wrath. “Tell me Miles that this idiot is no longer in uniform and has been reduced to nothing more than a stable assistant!”

Second Captain Miles Andrew Long bobbed his head rapidly. “Yes my Lady! In fact, Lord Redmont is being accompanied by the Captain, Lady Sahar and Kir as we speak to your chambers.” The fear and nervousness that Miles had bestowed earlier mirrored the relief Layla felt as she visibly relaxed. “Thank the gods,” she muttered. “The um, soldier, was um, taken care of by Kir,” Miles offered with a faint grin. “Our good Captain relieved him of his duties and sent him to join the ranks of the clean up crew in the City.” Layla's lips spread into a brilliant smile. “Our Captain knows me so well. A suitable punishment for such presumptuous behavior.” Layla was a firm believer in humility, and often felt those who stepped beyond such boundaries needed to be reminded that such pompous acts were beneath them as representations of Bariston.

“Excellent Miles, thank you for the well received news,” Layla praised the young man who beamed in pride. “Thank you, my Lady. I hear them coming up the stairway now.” He turned toward Verial with a questioning look. “Lady Victoire, if you like, I could accompany this gentleman to the-”

“Not necessary, Miles,” Layla interrupted smoothly. “This gentleman shall stay when I meet with Maxim Redmont. Miles, meet the new Protector Regent of Aleris, Verial Akilara.” At the sight of Miles' reaction, Layla added, “Verial was gracious in accepting the position to rule along side of me.”

The young Captain quickly went to one knee. “Your Majesty!” He blurted out, confused when Layla tsk'd and shook her head at the title. “Err...I meant...uh, my Lord Verial!” Miles heaved a sigh when he gathered an approving look from his Lady. “It is an honor to be in your service, sir. My sword is yours, Maj...err, my Lord.” Miles gathered himself upright when another knock was heard at the door. With Layla's permission, Miles opened the door and ushered in Lady Sahar, Captain Pennington, Madrin Kir, and finally, Lord Maxim Redmont. Captain Miles and Madrin stood near the doorway out of polite courtesy. She glanced at the warrior whom she hoped would accept position of Captain of the Alerian guard and nodded to him warmly. Words would be had with Madrin, but for now her focus was on the Redmont Lord and the new King.

Sahar and Ambrose took their places on either side of Layla, the latter raising a brow in the direction of Verial. Layla placed a hand gently upon the Captain's forearm. “Introductions shall be made momentarily,” before turning her attention toward Maxim, whom she noted was no longer wearing the colors representing his allegiance with Jade. Excellent, she thought. Lady Layla Victoire stepped forward and dipped her head in greeting to the Redmont Lord whom she had heard much about but never before met. The vampire was polite as he inclined his head to her in response, standing tall and proud before the petite ruler. There was much Layla wished to know about this Lord, but now was hardly the time for such personal discussions.

“I suppose I shall refer to you as Lord Redmont now,” she said with a hint of a smile. “Well met sir, and thank you for attending tonight. I apologize for any, inconveniences, shall we say that might have occurred? I am Layla Victoire, ruler of Bariston and its surrounding lands." Layla swept to the side in a swirl of crimson and gray silks as she held out a hand to acknowledge Verial who sat quietly, bemused by the whole situation. “I do believe you are acquainted with this gentleman, Lord Redmont. Verial Akilara has honored me and our people by accepting the role of Protector Regent of Aleris.” Her full lips widened into a slow smile. “Lady, gentlemen, allow me to present the one who shall rule by my side, our new King, Verial Akilara.” Layla knew that this display might possibly embarrass Verial, and she did not mean for it to be so, but Layla was a proper lady, and introductions of such importance had to be made. A strict follower of protocol, Layla would not deviate from her upbringing regardless of how uncomfortable it would make Verial, though her intentions were not unkind.

Lady Sahar smiled and curtsied, quietly murmuring her welcome to the new ruler, and Ambrose Pennington bent to one knee before Verial in the same manner Miles had done so before. Allegiances were sworn after introductions were made. Layla's smile never left her face, her dimples deepening. It was a lovely sight indeed. The Lady turned to face Maxim Redmont. “My Lord Maxim, as I said before, my heartfelt thanks are in order to you for taking the time out of your schedule to speak with me.” She gestured for all to sit around the table, and when all were comfortable, finally continued.

“Initially I asked you here to honor your deeds and heroics during battle, and planned to offer you a plot of land as a token of my appreciation and gratitude. I still do, in fact.” She paused then, glancing at Verial who nodded to her before speaking once more. “Despite the earlier, misgivings between my Captain and your sibling, I hope that we can put such foolishness aside.” She waited a beat, gauging the Redmont Lord's reaction. “In fact,” her voice grew softer. “I'd like to ask a favor of you, if I may be so bold.” Layla did not lead into her request as she had done so with Verial, instead choosing a direct tactic when it came to dealing with the Redmont Lord.

“You no longer wear the colors of Jade, Lord Maxim, and I will not say it displeases me. I asked you here because I want for you to serve at my side in Bariston when I eventually return home. It is my wish for you to be Commander of military, and to serve in my stead when I am to travel to Eiler to assist our new Protector in duties.” Layla leaned back in her chair, her gray gaze locking with the scarlet hued one of Maxim's. She held her glass in hand, her blonde curls grazing against her neck as she cocked her head to the side.

“So tell me, Maxim, how does Lord Commander sound to you?”

Post subject: Re: Ashes to Ashes - Aleris on Fire Post

Though the walk to Layla's chambers was shorter than expected, it still left the Redmont with time to think about the past few months and the whirlwind that had rearranged seemingly every facet of his life.

The first and most pressing issue, though he wouldn't ever admit it, was Alaina. The woman had appeared at the gates of the mountain fortress on Arthuran, where he had resided since leaving his family to their self-destruction. Her new (mortal) form was what had made it difficult to believe initially, and only after she had shamefully recalled the events of their very first encounter with clarity only she would have did he actually believe her. The argument that had followed that was mercifully brief, and ended with him locking her outside in the ruined courtyard, which was covered at the time in a mantle of soft snow. Only then, did he learn of her new form -- when he had noticed she was missing from her temporary prison and gone to investigate, he had found a set of footprints that suddenly and inexplicably vanished into a far more unusual track.

The next few weeks had been spent ignoring her -- when Maxim made it clear he didn't wish to waste any time with her, she had taken the opportunity to try and explain herself and change his mind. It wasn't until after a trip to the mausoleum that he had allowed it -- she had been waiting outside, and the mere fact that she didn't intrude was what had spurred him to at least hear what she had to say.

The following weeks were just as tense, however. Maxim hadn't forgotten how deceptive she could be, and in truth waited for the day when she'd try to end his existence in retaliation... a day which never came.

The next subject of his thoughts ended up being a far more personal one... the reason for his visit to the mausoleum of the fortress. The Huntress was interred there, this time for eternity. "I know you've never been in a situation that you couldn't change before, Maxim... but my fate was sealed long ago. Let's not waste any more of what little time I have left, please?" Those words still haunted him as though she had spoken them only yesterday, but in the end, he was content that she was finally able to rest in peace. It wasn't lost on the Redmont, that the only reason his regrets and fears had been banished, was because she had come to him.

In some turn of cosmic hilarity, it seemed her skill for diplomacy had finally rubbed off on him.

He was snapped out of that reverie when they approached the door and escorted him inside. While Maxim was unfamiliar with the other two, the third person was a familiar face that he hadn't been expecting to see. He nodded slightly to Verial with a faint smirk -- it seemed that his old friend had been invited as well, though one could argue that Verial was far more deserving of this unofficial ceremony than the former slayer was. For now, his attention turned to the other woman, and the resemblance in the determined gleam in her eyes was absolutely uncanny. "Likewise, Lady Victoire. If it's all the same to you, I'd prefer not to be addresssed by a title... that's something I chose to leave behind quite some time ago," Maxim replied politely. "As for an apology, that isn't needed, as I told them."

The introduction was what drew a smile to Maxim's face, if only because he knew Verial well enough to guess what the shapeshifter's reaction would be. As a result, he placed one fist over his lifeless heart in the same fashion as he had done when they had first met years earlier, though this time it was slightly more pronounced on purpose. "King Akilara once more... it does seem like we've both come full circle, doesn't it?" He straightened, and then nodded slightly. There was nothing sarcastic or exaggerated about what he said next, however. "They couldn't have made a better choice, Verial."

Once they had been seated and Layla thanked him for coming, he lifted one hand. "I would've been here sooner, as I mentioned to your other companions. Jade City is refusing to offer any further aid; as they've put it, 'their duty is fulfilled.' That would also be the reason for my departure... I had considered staying, but I've never been the type to hide behind city walls and pretend the rest of the world isn't there," Maxim muttered in disgust, a shake of his head further indicating the disdain he now held for his former allies.

"As for what I did, Lady Victoire... I need nothing in return. In times of war, people should band together in the face of a common enemy, and they should be willing to risk everything if it means victory... or at least, that's how I was raised. But nevertheless... you're welcome," he replied quietly, and though he was as direct as ever, it was obvious it wasn't meant to disrespect her. The final question she asked was the one that he wasn't exactly prepared for -- he had intended to meet with her and inform her of what had happened in Jade City, and to refuse any kind of citation or reward for his part in the siege -- which, as far as he was concerned, hadn't been that much. Thus far, Layla had struck him as a meticulous leader, and one that didn't act without thinking ahead several moves in advance for the sake of her people -- Maxim, on the other hand, preferred his freedom. In some ways, it was an impossibly ugly compromise between that freedom, and a renewed purpose that Maxim saw as worthwhile. In others, it was perfect and the only logical choice for the Redmont. Either way, his decision was made as soon as she had made the offer.

"I accept."

Madrin was glad Maxim came without a fight because, he really didn't want another war due to a stupid guards ego. He would admit he misjudged the Redmont a little, nobles usually lost their composure when their titles were ignored. Thank the gods Maxim is a reasonable man. Madrin was very surprised to find out Maxim dropped his own titles. Well at least Madrin could talk to this Redmont without having to be so formal. He had met so many nobles in the past few days that all the formality was aggravating. However, he knew that to keep the peace some people needed assurances.

When they returned to Layla Victoire's chambers Madrin noted they had replaced the idiot with an older guard who seemed to know how to behave, he was glad. They were let in without any problem, he had wondered if Layla's private chat was over, now he knew. Madrin held back as the others in the group headed for spots around the table so that Maxim could say what he needed to. Layla was very much the proper lady in her greetings and even gave him a smile.

King Verial Akilara huh, Madrin couldn't keep the mischievous grin off his face though he did hide it by turning his head towards the door. Another victim, she was a sly one he would give her that he might like Layla yet. He would stick with Lord Akilara when referring to the new Protector Regent however. After the others swore oaths Madrin approached Verial and gave a respectful bow. "Congratulations Lord Akilara I wish you luck in your endeavors for the country, I am no noble so I have little to offer but my promise to aid Aleris as I can. Then he met Verial's eyes with his ice blue orbs that had been the last thing many ill intentioned people saw, and let him see that he meant every word.

Shortly after that Layla gestured for everyone to be seated so that the discussion could continue. It seems Jade City's Mayor may need a lesson in humility but that was someone else's problem Madrin hoped it was bloodless. He let Layla and Maxim converse as he sat quietly and waited for his chance.

When Commander Redmont was done Lady Victoire accepted him and the conversation paused briefly so he jumped in. "Excuse me Commander Redmont, and Lady Victoire but I need to speak." He waited until everyone's attention was his and plunged ahead. "I would like to request aid for the good people of Chaliceton because, they are a small community that needs any help you can offer. Madrin let his sorrow show as he continued. "I was there so I know, they only have one mystical healer with very limited ability. In addition half of their city was destroyed and many people were left homeless." He then regained his composure. "When I left we had found many survivors and a dozen masons were working on rebuilding the town." He waited for a response from the current rulers of Aleris.

After Madrin listened to their reply he had more to say and continued. "Now in reference to The position of Captain of the Alerian guard I need more time to think about it." He hoped he didn't offend Layla but he had more important things to do. "I promise you Lady Victoire and Lord Akilara that I will give it all the consideration it deserves. However, I have some obligations that need to be seen to immediately, I will be leaving before the sun rises tomorrow. Thank you all for letting me speak." Truthfully he had already decided to accept but, he needed time before taking a new job. He waited to see what anyone wanted to say before he left.

Quinn looked at the table before him for most of the conversation. Layla Victoire was going around speaking to each person and they in turn spoke back. He wasn't sure exactly what was said by any of them, but his attention was pulled up when she addressed him. His eyes slowly met her's as she spoke. When she was done he softly shook his head, and when he replied it was almost a whisper, "Thank you Lady Victoire, however I don't need any land. Please use the plot you would have given me for the families who have lost their homes. I have neither the abilities nor the resources to do much for them myself, let this be my contribution."

When they were done he stood and made his way out of the room. The Lycanthrope asked one of the guards as he left for directions to where they'd taken Deanna's body. He nodded his thanks, having spoken more in the private chambers than he had since his last conversation with his mate. He hadn't really felt like talking much since then. Making his way down to the infirmary where they'd prepared Deanna, Quinn couldn't help but feel his heart skip every other beat as he got closer. He wanted to make sure that they'd done what they said they would and honored her the way she deserved (Not that he was at this point in time, but grief makes one think and do things that they might not normally do).

Entering the room, he looked around and spotted her almost instantly. It wasn't that she was close, it was just that he had been looking for the familiar features of her face and could usually spot her quickly in a crowd. He made his way over to her and looked at what they'd done. She was gorgeous, just as she had been only a few days ago. As he came to the table where she rested, a tear slid down his cheek.
"Thank you." he croaked to the attendant beside him. She was okay. He could put her to rest now. He couldn't have done that the way she had been before, but now he could. "Can I leave her here, for just a little while longer?" at the nod from the attendant he added, "Don't let anyone take her but me. Don't let anyone burn her. She's to be buried, please..." his voice caught on him as he realized what he was saying.

Deanna was dead and he'd thought through enough of it to have a plan. The thing was he hadn't even known that he'd thought it out. It was like a part of him had kept that a secret until just now.
"Thank you." he said again to the lady and turned to walk away. Quinn made his way back up to the inner chambers of the Lady of Aleris, and when he approached the doors he heard voices in the room again. His wolf hearing could pick up a few familiar tones, Verial, Layla, that one guy who'd been in their meeting, he couldn't remember his name, and Maxim. His brother hadn't been there before, but now apparently he was. Looking at the guard he said simply, "I need to speak with Verial alone when he's done. Could you ask him if he'll meet with me?"

This guard had learned his lesson from the last. He didn't even speak to Quinn, simply nodded and stepped into the chambers, closing the door behind him. If he'd tried, the Redeemer could probably have listened in on what they were saying, however he wasn't that interested. A few moments later the guard stepped back out. He closed the door behind him again and Quinn thought for a minute that his request had been denied. "Protector Regent Akilara, will see you when he's done. If you'll follow me to the next room down, he'll be in with you shortly."

Protector Regent. That was a pretty new title for Verial. He didn't know the man well enough either way to say if it was a good or bad thing, so he just continued to stay silent. The guard led him to another room, opening the door for him to enter. "Thank you." and just before the door closed leaving him alone in the room, Quinn added, "When my brother gets done could you tell him I'm taking Deanna's body to bury it if he wants to come along?" The guard hesitated then nodded.

He wasn't waiting for too long. Or maybe he was. Quinn wasn't sure. But Verial...Protector Regent Akilara, rather, entered the room with a guard that had helped pull the man off of the werewolf before. The guard clearly thought he was in for round two when he noticed Quinn there as well. Before he could say anything however, Verial told him to leave them alone. Once the guard left and the door was once again closed Verial sat down across from him. Neither spoke for a while, and finally the Redmont Lycan opened his mouth.

"Verial, I wanted you to know that what I did with Deanna's body wasn't intended to dishonor her." his voice was soft like before with Layla and the more his talked to less steady it sounded. "I've never lost someone in battle before. My mother died of old age, and she had everything already planned out. She was expecting to die, and had made sure there wasn't much for me to have to worry about. When Deanna died, I wasn't ready for it. All I knew was that where she had been, there is a hole. And they were taking the bodies and burning them in a heap together. I couldn't let her be forgotten like that." the whole time he talked he looked at the floor, if he'd been looking at Verial's face he probably wouldn't be able to continue, but he felt that the dragon deserved to know why he'd done what he did.

"Believe me, I never 'toted her around like baggage'. I wrapped her so that the sun wouldn't hit her directly and so that anything that..." he stopped unable to say the next part, "...leaked out...wouldn't get all over everything. I couldn't let just anyone have her. I needed to know that she'd be taken care of since I didn't know how to do it." he sighed and looked up finally, tears now running down both cheeks. "I miss her Verial."

Layla stared at Maxim Redmont for a heartbeat or two, simply amazed at how readily he accepted her offer. A slow smile spread across her lips as she nodded to him. “Well done, Lord Commander. I am pleased by your decision.” A great burden was lifted from her shoulders, as Verial accepted his position as Protector Regent, and now Maxim Redmont took on the role as Bariston's new Lord Commander. Perhaps peace could finally be restored to Aleris sooner than she had originally thought.

“Lord Commander, when it is convenient for you, for I know you must have other business to tend to, I would like to speak to you privately concerning matters.” The Lady Victoire had not lied when saying she was pleased by his decision, but was not such a fool as to not sit down and get to know the man, or in his case vampire, who would not only be protecting her people, but her own life.

The blonde ruler turned her head as Madrin Kir spoke up politely. Layla listened to what he had to say and nodded to him. “Of course Madrin Kir. Chaliceton's need will not go unanswered.” She glanced at Verial who nodded his assent to her before turning to Ambrose Pennington, Captain of the Bariston guard. “Captain, take our good warrior to the storerooms and gather whatever he deems necessary for Chaliceton's survival. We can spare healers, so ensure that at least half a dozen go with him.” The Captain dipped his head in acknowledgment even as Madrin spoke once more. “Warrior,” Layla said softly, her lips curving into a faint smile. “I would be most disappointed in you indeed should you chose to take up such a great responsibility whilst leaving loose ends untied. It is admirable that you wish to tend to prior obligations. Take what time is needed and return to me when you are able.” With that, she bid Madrin Kir farewell and watched as he followed Ambrose out to the storerooms for supplies.

Just as the two men were leaving, a uniformed guard entered the room begging permission to speak to Verial. Layla remained silent as her new co-ruler's presence was requested by Quinn Redmont. Layla closed her eyes briefly, recalling their earlier conversation. The grieving man had graciously given up his land to the people, a selfless gift in his time of pain. Layla felt a hand upon her shoulder and opened her eyes as Sahar murmured in her hear. The Lady of Bariston sighed with relief at the knowledge that Quinn's fallen woman had been properly tended to. “Good. Perhaps now he will have some peace.” Layla had noted the expression on Maxim Redmont's face, quite subtle but one that the Lady caught with her sharp gray gaze, and made a mental note to ask if the new Lord Commander was personally known to the deceased woman.

Verial took his leave, followed by all four guards at Layla's gestured command. She knew that it was unlikely that the new Regent would be pleased by having his every move followed, but it was a necessary precaution that Layla would not budge on. Suddenly her once filled chambers were emptied of all but herself, Maxim, and Sahar. Layla took a deep steadying breath and let it out slowly, allowing her weary form drop rather ungracefully into her chair once more. Since her arrival on the continent, Layla received very little sleep, and the dark circles under her eyes that she tried desperately to conceal with powder were now showing. It was rather impressive that she managed to keep her spine of steel despite the stressful situations she was faced with.

Sahar, bless her heart, had thoughtfully poured her Lady another glass of wine before turning to Maxim. “My Lord Commander,” she said in that accented voice of hers. “Is there some refreshment I can offer you?” The desert magae poured herself a glass as was custom of her and took a sip as she stood, waiting to serve Maxim if requested. Layla offered Sahar her thanks and sipped of her own wine, allowing her posture to slump some as she felt the weight of the day finally creep upon her. “Maxim, I'm afraid Sahar cannot offer you any of her blood, for she insists that her body is a temple of purity,” she said straight-faced, though her eyes twinkled with amusement.

Rarely did Layla jest, and if so, it was strictly with Sahar with whom she 'let her hair down', so to speak. The Lady Victoire had to maintain a certain image in front of others, but having known the desert woman since she was a young lady herself, Layla considered her the sister she never had and made an acception for her. The fact that Maxim Redmont was present did not change matters. The healer grinned at her Lady's teasing “My Lady speaks truly my Lord Commander, but if you like, I am sure I can find a willing donor if that is what you wish.” Both women sipped at their wine, identical smiles on their faces as they watched the reaction of the Redmont Lord.

Post subject: Re: Ashes to Ashes - Aleris on Fire Post

Verial watched amusedly at the way Layla's fingers tightened around her wine stem when Verial mentioned that Maxim had been sent away. Any second now, he imagined it shattering to pieces and that he might need to escort her to the infirmary or call Sahar. To top it off, her voice raising as she drew herself to her full height, Verial half believed she might flip the table in anger. Thankfully, Miles entered the room in quite the fluster and explained in a hurry that Maxim had been stopped by Madrin Kir. Apparently Madrin knocked the guard out who decided to place authority over the Layla's guest and Maxim was now being escorted back to the council room by Sahar, Captain Pennington and Madrin himself. At the relief of this news, Layla's temper curbed dramatically and the anger in her gray colored eyes flickered away.

Miles offered to escort Verial out since Maxim was on his way, but was stopped by Layla who explained Verial's new position as Protector Regent. Almost as if on cue, Miles fumbled trying to search for words and apologies, bowing down on one knee and trying to coach himself not to call Verial "Your Majesty". It was obvious that Miles was not aware of Layla's plans prior; he looked quite taken back that the same man he had brought to the castle earlier was now ruling by Layla's side to protect the realm. Verial smiled softly through all of Mile's stuttering and then waved his hand for the man to stand up, which he did.

"Thank you, Miles," Verial began. "It is an honor to have you fighting along my side, but remember the people of this city need you at their service more than I do."

Not soon after did Miles go open the door to invite the company of Sahar, Ambrose, Maxim and Madrin Kir into the council chambers. As all were seated, Layla told everyone the news of Verial's acceptance to her position. Sahar welcomed Verial and Captain Pennington reacted in nearly the same manner as Miles (though not as flustered), offering his allegiance to Verial. He accepted Ambrose's offer and then the Captain was seated once more.

Madrin Kir also came to Verial and bowed before him. Despite his appearance of being quite the roughened warrior, Madrin was very humble in his words. Instead of giving Verial his allegiance, Madrin gave his skills in helping protect the people of Aleris. To this, Verial smiled softly and nodded to the man before him. "I appreciate your offer, Madrin Kir. All over the realm, the people need help rebuilding and protection more than anything."

After Madrin was finished, Maxim raised his fist and placed it over his heart, in the same noble manner he had performed years ago when they first met in Oneiro and Verial had hired Maxim as a mercenary to help save his doomed kingdom. "Indeed it does, Maxim," Verial said with a faint smirk. "Thank you."

During this, Verial watched out of the corner of his odd colored eyes as Layla was prepping herself up for something. Once the slight commotion had settled down, Layla turned her attention to Maxim and all was quiet again as the rest of the company in the council chambers listened. Despite any ill feelings that had been floating about earlier, Layla now appeared both anxious and pleased by Maxim's presence at the meeting. So much so that she offered Maxim the military position she had planned to give him all along: Commander of the Bariston army.

Layla leaned back in her chair after asking Maxim, waiting on baited breath. Verial was not entirely sure Maxim would accept Layla's offers. The last time Verial had seen Maxim, he was wandering the forests near Grand City, showing up unexpectedly during Verial's first meeting with Deanna. The former slayer and Redmont Lord was very much alone, not in the company of any of his family, and still appeared to carry that same aura even now. On the other hand, Verial could not hold back his slight grin when Maxim did indeed accept Layla's offer. It seemed that old habits did die hard - for both him and Maxim.

"It appears we will be working alongside each other, my friend," Verial said with a nod to Maxim.

Once Maxim had accepted his new high-ranking position, Madrin stole a chance to speak up. In addition to the obvious problems with Jade City not offering assistance to Grand City, the snowy town of Chaliceton needed to be rebuilt and Madrin was asking for aid. Being the only town on the continent of Arthuran, it was an essential place to be reconstructed for those who lived there and travelers. Considering the four deities of the realm had been freed, Arthuran would no doubt be covered with snow again soon meaning the people of Chaliceton needed suitable shelter. For this reason, Madrin could not accept Layla's position of Captain of the Alerian guard and instead had decided to return to the Chaliceton.

Verial stood from his seat and nodded towards Madrin as Layla confirmed that the soldier should go back to Chaliceton. "Of course, Madrin. The people of Chaliceton will need you there, so head back as quick as you can and with whatever Captain Pennington can help you gather up. We'll send additional aide on another ship behind you."

It was just as well that Verial had stood to bid farewell to Madrin Kir. As he did, the doors had opened before Madrin could leave and a guard entered explaining that Quinn Redmont was requesting Verial's presence for a private meeting. Verial sighed softly, mostly under his breath, and let the guard know he would be out in a moment. He excused himself from Maxim, Layla and the other's company, leaving the room the same time as Madrin. After the two were outside the door, Verial noticed four of Layla's guards were shadowing him - a little bit annoying, but expected. Verial went an opposite path from Madrin Kir and was led to a room not far from where the council chambers were.

After Verial was inside the room and in Quinn's presence, Verial turned and told the guards to go. At first they were hesitant but Verial glared at them and ordered another command for them to leave. Sure, Layla would likely be upset Verial had sent her guards away, but he would not be protected by four soldiers in the company of a likely distraught Quinn. Verial, above all else, wasn't a coward and if Quinn wanted some sort of revenge for Verial attacking him earlier, he wasn't going to make an attempt to hide behind others, newly crowned Protector Regent or not. Instead of retaliating however, Quinn spoke to Verial with a voice that was very strained and trying to find redemption.

"I am surprised, Quinn," Verial started, "that you didn't know Deanna was expecting to die also. Deanna's death is no different from your mother's really. The way Deanna fought in everything she did - with courage and unrestrained strength - you don't challenge life like that and not expect to die in the process. And Quinn... when you love someone as you did with Deanna, you take into consideration that eventually that person will leave you - whether by death or some other means. You should enjoy the time you had with Deanna. You will always have your memories with her, but you need to also set her free. You don't go grasping onto false hope and carrying around the dead regardless of what... precautions... you took."

Verial tried not to shudder too much at Quinn's mention of blood leaking out of Deanna's white sheet covering. He didn't want to think about the image, as Verial had seen the stained sheet already since Quinn brought Deanna's deceased body in with him to the meeting. His thoughts, however, we broken when Quinn's head, previously bowed, tilted to look back up at Verial, tears running from the corners of the therianthrope's eyes. In all honesty, part of Verial wanted to yell at Quinn some more for what he had done. After all, nothing that Quinn could have said seemed to justify his actions for Verial. But when Quinn exposed his deepest emotions to Verial, he tried to soften his edge a little bit. Verial took a step forward and placed a comforting hand on Quinn's shoulder.

"You will always miss her, Quinn," Verial said with a confident nod, "but Deanna will never truly be gone as she will exist in your memories and other people's memories who loved her as well. This you should keep in mind and it will be a gentle reminder that Deanna would want nothing more from you than for you to be strong after her death. Because let's face it, she would be really pissed at you if she could tell you herself."
