Post subject: An Ending and a Beginning
Hi everyone,
It's been a long time since anyone has been role playing at Aleris. The last post was from September 16th to be exact. I'm going to make this as short and sweet as possible, although most of my posts never are no matter how hard I try. Anna (Dystopia) and I discussed Aleris' activity level and what we wanted to do this time around. We've had our ups and downs, but this time certain we're not going to recover. So Anna and I talked and talked about it for quite some time and we have decided that we're going to shut down Aleris.
That's really difficult for me to say, because I always promised that Aleris would stay open even if it was just Anna and I playing. However, we feel that as Aleris has been open since 2008, we've exhausted a lot of stories and adventures. There's not much that's new about it. I think Aleris is comfortable and home-like for some people because it's been open for so long. It has always been there if people needed something to go back to. However, I think that's also a downfall, as it's not meant to change too much.
Personally, I will always have fond memories of Aleris. I kept thinking of ways that I could salvage Aleris. I thought maybe we could change the story or change the lore somehow and make it fresh and new, but all the things I want to do with, can't really be done with Aleris due to its structure and how it was built. Aleris is a very open RPG for new people, but I also feel its limiting for new growth as far as gameplay is concerned. I can forgive the game for that though. I've written some great stories at this RPG and I hope other people leave this game feeling the same way too.
So what's next?
To start, we didn't just want to shut down the game. I talked to a few people about the game possibly closing and it was James (aka Victor Sage and Dravvin) who suggested, "End of the world storyline, please?" I really liked this idea and so did Anna. We came up with an ending realm wide storyline to tie things together. It's currently up and we hope you all join us. There's no ending time for this storyline; I have no problems with it going on for as long as it needs too. To be clear though, it's a very dismal storyline and there will be no saving Aleris.
For the board itself, you don't have to rush to get your character sheets or any posts copied off of here. I intend to keep the board up for some time as I have the web space and domain name. Even after I decided to clean this site up, I'll still have a copy of the database, so if you ever need anything, it may take some time, but you can contact me and ask for whatever.
Finally, Anna and are working on a new game! I know some of you may be thinking, "You're shutting down a game and starting a new one?" Yes, this exactly. I would like to continue role playing, but I also want to do something new. I want new settings and lore and all that good stuff. We've been doing some brainstorming on a separate forum and we've got some ideas and a map sketch down. This game probably won't be open for a while, like end of first quarter maybe, but we're going to try it out and see how things go.
That being said, if anyone is interested in helping us with the new game, please let Anna and I know. We're looking for additional GMs. Even if you don't want to be a GM, we've all been together for quite some time and I hope to see some familiar faces. The opening date for this game will be posted here, but I also plan on letting everyone know via Aleris' facebook page and an email. If you have your email addressed updated on Aleris' forum, you'll probably get the notice.
Anyway, that's about all I have to say for now. Questions, comments? Please let us know! Also, I'm hoping this post actually gets seen by quite a few people, but if not, I just want to send my thanks to many of you. Without the players, Aleris wouldn't have gone on for this long. We've had some fantastic times together and I won't forget them.
