Hi everyone,

I always liked this sort of post, so decided to start it here. Tell me about your character names! Where did they come from, how do you pronounce them, etc. I'm interested in things like this for some reason. I know sometimes it's simple as, "Oh, someone gave me the character with the name", but if you have any neat stories, feel free to share.

Example:

Memoria (mem - ore - ee - uh) - I think in Spanish or Italian it means "memory". However, I got the name from Final Fantasy IX. "Memoria" is the name of the last dungeon in the game (I think they called it the "Place of Memories"), a very dreamy like place.

I don't know if it's more funny or sad, but my name comes completely from Star Trek. "Dravvin" was one of the captains in a novel I was reading and I liked it, and Kirk, well.... I actually first started using the name Dravvin on WebTV that my dad had gotten me for xmas one year. He made my name DRAVVIN all caps. It wasn't until later in VampirePub when things started getting more complex that Dravvin needed a last name and well...it was either Kirk or Picard and I didn't know enough french to use Picard.

Odin, my wife and I had discussed what we wanted to name our first born. I went looking through my book of rune names and meanings and found Odin. Then I named Dravvin's son after him. :)

Oh, geez...

I'm not even sure where I got Aursra. I am a huge Lucy Maude Montgomery fan though (She was most famous for writing Anne of Green Gables. So, the last name Blythe was from the nemesis/later love interest Gilbert Blythe. My Philippa is also a L.M.M. inspired name. There was a Philippa Blake. I wanted a character with a name that could be feminine or more masculine, considering the nature of the character, and thought of Phil.

When I was working as a nanny, one of the little girls in my care's name was Michalina. I always liked the sound of it, and thus, my Mychalyna was 'born'. (I've played her as a young adult in other rpgs, but I'm curious about exploring her earlier years here at Aleris!)

Side note: I started out on webtv too!

Got ViolenceJack from an anime I had only read about, ppl would usually call me by VJ (heck Kevin still refers to be as VJ rather than my real name).
So during the transition from one game to another I changed ViolenceJack to Vijai Solai.
VJ and Vijai are both pronounced the same, so I got Vijai from VJ.
I dont know how I came up with Solai, prolly from mixing up letters.

Dain (VJ's twin) was taken from the celtic god of Violence's name Dian, I just switched the i and the a.

Chaos and Whisper were named by September, vj's wife.

Spire and Glint were just some words I liked while flipping through the dictionary.

Elchris was the name of a bow in Kings Field 2.

Malvernis was the name of a kingdom in a table top game that used miniatures, I never played the game, but I used to buy the mini's and paint them.

Virage came from the word Mirage, Garis came from Garrison, Vang from Fang. Jirge from Surge.

Vrai came from a french dictionary, it supposedly means True.

Ah Vault-Exile used to go as Lucied, Lucied was the name of a wolf/hound from Wild Arms.

I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting.

Wish Cielle Star - My very first character. I got the name "Wish" from the Nine Inch Nails song, which has nothing to do with this character - I just thought it would make a neat first name. Cielle is from the French word "ciel" which I believe means "sky". "Star" I picked just because I really liked stars.

Vault has had 3 names.

Lucied (stated above), Midori (Japanese for Greenery, also a Melon Liquer), and Vault, which I just happened to like how it sounded. After talking to Moon-Exile he let me tag on Exile to Vault's name if I changed his background a lil' bit to fit the Exile Plot.

Katrophe Myrth Denryu (Kat-troe-fae Mirth Den-rye-you) - The name actually began as Dark-kat, my first IRC name. Eventually I felt my character needed a full name and not just some nickname, so it evolved. Myrth, aka mirth, sounded cool and Katrophe is a generally lighthearted guy so it made sense. Denryuu, minus one 'u', was stolen from the japanese name for a pokemon I really liked (I used to play pokemon silver when I was younger, but it was an early-released japanese version.. anyways the critter is Ampharos in English). Katrophe himself was never given a real name and was referred to simply as "the Tiger" or "the Cat" before he escaped his creators, hence when asked what his name was he said "Kat, with a k!". Odds are he made up his full name later? *cough shrug*

Xezvimhi the Birvuo (Zezz-Vee-Me the Burr-Vuu-o) - Xezvimhi is actually Katrophe's name, when ran through a language code I made. In fact, you may notice the letters are the exact length and the vowels and consonants occupy the same places. Denryu is also ran through the cipher and produced Birvuo, a magically created 'race' which includes Xezvimhi/Katrophe. This is fitting, as Xezvimhi himself is only the darker aspect of Katrophe's own mind and he was never really given a name of his own. I get asked how this name is pronounced waaay too often..

Heyas Aaron! Glad to see you back.

As for how the utterly adorable faery girl, Itarilde, got her name, Sorvy gets the credit for that. Itarilde means 'Sparkling Brilliance'. LOTR fans can read all about it! No middle name yet..open to suggestions! Nothing silly please.

Bansca 'The Fair' DeepSinger, aka 'B' to those who know him well, I'll confess. I cheated a tiny bit. I swiped the actual character name off of a NPC list. Ok, it was probably cheating, but I don't care, I've made him awesome! I suppose it's easy enough to say, but 'Bansca' sounds like 'Banska'---the first part of some Slovakian town. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bansk%C3%A1_%C5%A0tiavnica
(You can scroll down to the pronunciation info to hear it)

Joshua, B's son was named by him and his mother, Toxic. His first name came from a fella his pa admired and I can't remember the first name now, it started with an 'A' I believe.

Rook, Umbra, and Raze, (Josh's kids), were named by Sorvy. They have no middle names either far as I know.
